Milwaukee members - advice, please

An old high school buddy of mine is considering a move from the Redlands area in California to Wisconsin.

The husband’s work requires international travel so they are looking to use the Milwaukee airport as home base and living in Cedarburg.

I’m seeking advice/info from any of you familiar with the area I can share with them to help them make their decision.

Here is their situation:

They have sheep, goats, rabbits, chickens and other farm animals they plan to bring with them.

High school daughter is very active in 4-H.

One son is in his 2nd year of college in Reno, so I don’t know if he will stay or transfer out.

The family is devoutly Catholic.

Real estate info would be helpful.
Cost of living info
High school info
Parish info would really be helpful.
Hospital/medical resources
Weather tips
Insurance - automobile, health, home

And anything else you can think of.

Been away from Milwaukee for a long time.

Spiritually, I was, um, not impressed with the leadership of the previous bishop, Rembert Weakland. The new bishop, Timothy Dolan sounds good from what I’ve heard him say so far, but Weakland’s influence will be long lasting. Best bet is to ‘shop’ parishes. There are better and worse ones - like most places.

I dunno where Cedarburg is. But most of Milwaukee area has lower cost of living than Chicago. And Chicago is better than virtually anywhere in California!

Like any metro area, you’d need to be out further, probably in an unincorporated area (or expensive estate lots) to have livestock. But there’s no shortage of that, or other folk with similar interests. ‘Farmettes’ are readily available on the real estate markert.

You’ll lack no hospital facilities. LOL, it’s not Zimbabwe! For hard core prblems, the world class facilities of Chicago are 1.5 hours away. Mayo Clinic is only about 5 hours away.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with me. I’ll make note of the parish issue for them. I think it’ll be a good move for them so long as there is a strong faithful and loyal to the Vatican parish.

Filled with antique shops, little boutiques, winery (pretty good one), and all in the early settler period. I can give you tons more info on area, etc. but we are just getting ready for supper.

Weakland is gone, we have Dolan now, he is very personable, charismatic, good speaker. And he did inherit a lot of problems, but some good things too.

I’ll get you more later.

I do not know this family’s income situation but the husband travels internationally monthly and the wife works part time to keep her foreign language skills in use - spanish and japanese - so I would be interested to know about demographics in the general area as well since she indicated a desire to find a similar type job where they go.

She will be visiting Cedarburg mid-October with her daughter.
Her husband has already visited the surrounding Milwaukee area in previous business trips (I suspect he’s the one who picked out Cedarburg for his wife to consider).

Well, it sounds like they may be right at home then in Cedarburg. By itself, there isn’t a whole lot of major companies around, (tons of those little shops though) so most people commute from there to other spots. It is close to Mequon, where there are quite a few office complex type buildings with possible jobs for her, or they could go into Milwuakee. Depending on where, you are usually looking at about 45 minute commute to most places or less. Cedarburg can be very rural in parts, so farm animals are deffinately a possibility. The whole southern eastern Wisconsin area is (historically) predominantely German, with lots of Polish, some Danish (Racine area) and pockets of Irish here and there. Of course, that has changed over the years, and now many parts of the city are Hispanic, or African-American.

Property values can change dramatically per area, but figure in most average middle class areas a modest 3 br with 1/4 -ish lot house will go for 150-195. In Cedarburg that would probably start at 200 and go up from there. A hobby farm type property (maybe 5-7 acres) could cost anywhere from 280 to 400 depending on buildings, etc. Similar prices could be found in the Brookfield area as well, which is on the west side of Milwaukee, where Cedarburg is North and East. There are also several nice areas with farm possibility to the North.

October is a nice time, leaves are starting to turn. We just went through one of our typical Wisconsin weather changes. Yesterday is was 84, today it is 55. This is not unusual. An old standard joke is you go to work in the morning in a snowsuit and come home in shorts. And do not let anyone convince you to use a snowblower on the roof. Seriously, it usually isn’t that bad, but it can be. I can post some Wisconsin jokes for you to send him.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I just had our 3rd child, and I forgot how little time you have for anything else. 😃
 
I attended a Mens Conference in St. Paul, Minnesota and Archbishop Dolan was the main speaker. He told us about his time in Rome and his great love for JPII. He told us all to start living for Jesus. We should speak up when someone swears. We should live chastely. We should go to confession regularily. Archbishop Dolan is a very solid man. He tells it like it is and I greatly respect him.

One of the most moving things I witnessed is watching him hear the confession of another man. They were in the corner of the room. Each had his head on the others shoulder. Archbishop Dolan had his hand on the others mans back. Archbishop Dolan is a big man. He carries himself like a father and talks like a father should. His words and body language spoke the truth and his actions demonstrated compassion.

Archbishop Dolan is a man that seminarians can respect and follow. The Milwaukee Archdiocese is blessed to have Bishop Dolan. I think Bishop Dolan needs Catholics that know and live the truth.

I would encourage the friend to write a personal letter to Archbishop Dolan and explain his concerns and ask the Archbishop where he can best use a faithful Catholic (not necessarily where he would be most comfortable).

This could be a great opportunity to serve and trust God.
