just wondering if its against the church to get a ministers degree online:shrug:, I want to stay catholic

I don’t know what you mean by “a minister’s degree”.

there is no such thing it is a scam
yes it is a very grave sin for a CAtholic to attempt to become a minister or cleric of another religion

You are going to have to clarify and explain what you have in mind because as a Catholic, there are a ton of theological courses that you can take some online others in regular class format. If you are thinking of remaining Catholic and becoming a minister in another denomination, other questions will also need to addressed. I’m doing my MA in theological studies.

Perhaps I can help you with this question. Please feel free to write me if you aren’t comfortable using this forum.

If it’s a degree not from a Catholic institution then it is against the Church.

If you’re talking about going to an online university and taking courses to get an academic degree in some field of ministry, then no, it is okay, although the value of an online degree is debatable.

If instead you’re talking about something like signing up online to be a minister in, for example, the Universal Life Church, then that is strictly forbidden. You cannot join another church, even a ridiculous joke church. You certainly cannot do it in order to officiate at a friend’s non-Catholic wedding, which is usually what people have in mind when they are talking about “becoming a minister” online.

What do you mean by “ministers degree”? Do you actually mean online or do you mean by distance learning? If it’s completely online who would be the awarding body?

I wonder why the OP hasn’t come back to explain what he means?

I’m not really sure exactly what the op has in mind but one of the women that I worked with told me that she is a minister and that she got her “ministers degree” on line for a small fee. Here in the south there are a lot of these little churches started up by someone that got a “ministers/preachers degree” on line and they are the head of their churches. Can’t drive one mile in any direction without passing one.

They are generally non-denominational and name their churches, Open Door, Open Bible, Sword of Jesus and one I was actually invited to, Tell it to Jesus. Very anti-Catholic with the minister/preacher rolling around on the floor. He got his “degree” on line also and they carry a card in their wallets stating so.

Needless to say I went one time because my son and the preachers granson were school mates.

However, the evening was spent preaching about how Catholics would go to hell for worshipping Mary and their pagan beliefs yada yada. All eyes were on me. LOL!

Anyway, that’s all I know about the on line ministers at least in my area.
