This may sound a little odd, considering the huge disaster befalling our country at the moment, but I thought it was interesting enough to share.

Today, I attended our Diocesan pro-life meeting at a nearby retreat house. My 2 year old daughter Cecilia was with me (the other kids were at school). After it was over, we decided to walk around the outdoor Stations that are on a path through the woods. Just as we started in, my daughter reached down and handed me something. “Look what I found, Mommy”. Well, I started to say the usual “Oh that’s wonderful, honey” but then I looked at what she had given me. It was a very small pinecone. And at the top, on the side, formed by the pinecone petals, there was a perfect pro-life rose!! I was amazed!! I’ve never seen anything like it. It is so perfectly like the pro-life roses you see on pins and things, it is uncanny. I wish I had a digital camera so that I could show it to you all.

Anyway, it reminded me, that in the grand scheme of things, even when life seems so big and overwhelming, God still speaks to us in the small and seemingly insignificant things. And it came from a child. I would have never picked it up if I was by myself. God doesn’t need a huge devastating hurricane to get our attention. He sends us messages in little ways every day. We just need to pay attention. We are never alone. Anyway, I know that I love the small sign he sent me today from the tiny hand of my youngest child. Isn’t God amazing?!?!

Legeorge, Thank you for your little anecdote.

I think we are all counting our blessings this week grateful for even the smallest things we too readily take for granted. As I lay my head down to sleep last night I thanked God for the comfort of a bed, a glass of water beside it with a light to turn on should I wake up in the dark. I was even grateful for the safety of my family. I prayed survivors would experience an increase in hope and fell asleep with the prayer, “Jesus, I trust in Thee.”

Something beautiful will happen out of all this devastation as God is always faithful to his promises. Evil cannot triumph over the innate beauty and goodness of people. Remember what Satan thought was his moment of victory at the crucifixion was in fact the crushing of his skull in defeat. Death has been vanquished.

Finally, whereas St. Francis found flowers shouted to him of the glory of God Fr. Corapi has said sometimes God needs to strike us in the middle of the forehead with a 2x4 in order to get our attention. Well, He has it.

How beautiful of both of you to think this way and to be so thankful in the midst of this. God is so loving and good, it saddens me to think that so many are blaming Him. Let’s all be thankful for what we have, and help those who need us.
