Miracles Performed by non-Christians?

There have been many documented cases of Catholic priests healing the sick and the lame. Christ had given this gift to the Catholic priests and continues to do so.
Do you know that a Catholic priest is the only person who can perform an Excorcism and succeed? No one else has the power to drive out evil except for these holy men. Then why wouldn’t God also give them the power to heal?
A true story. A young man many years ago was posessed by the devil at eight years old. They were Lutheran. When they called their Lutheran minister, he replied “You need to call a Catholic priest, as he is the only one who can perform and drive out the demon.”
Good grief… what a stack of straw!

I, a lowly Protestant pastor, have administered the anointing of the sick at the hospital and in homes more times than I can count. Sometimes, patients have died, sometimes, they have gotten better, some have had miraculous recoveries, and some died within an hour of being anointed.

The true understanding of healing and miracles, as least in the New Testament (particularly the book of James), is the understanding of the Greek word sozo, a word which means just not healing, but also salvation and wholeness.

The healing of the soul may be more important and no less miraculous than the healing of a body. The fact is, we are all terminal cases. It may well be that death is the Ultimate Healing - being reconciled to God in Christ.

Amen Pastor - this is a beautiful thought. Thank you for sharing it.

… medicine-confounding miracles performed by the Catholic saints from ancient to modern times. …
when ordinary Catholics or even Pope (s) become sick , do they first depend on miracles of Saints first ? Then if it does not work , they consult doctors ?

Greetings,

As a “cradle Catholic,” I am well aware of the countless authenticated and medicine-confounding miracles performed by the Catholic saints from ancient to modern times. I am genuinely curious, however: has there ever been a documented miracle performed by a non-Catholic Christian or non-Christian monotheist? For example, has a virtuous Muslim ever cured a cancerous tumor, plague-stricken tissue, or bodily injury through the power of Allah, as many saints have through the power of Jesus Christ? This is not in the least a sneering or sarcastic question, so I, in turn, am looking for an honest answer. Thank you!

Try the Orthodox 🙂

What matters is the result, not the human agent.

Miracles can and have been performed by non-Christians. Even in the Gospel of Matthew, Christ Himself says that many people will perform miracles who are not necessarily holy people.

"Not every one who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.’ " - Matthew 7:21-22

Performing miracles is great, but we must remember that everything comes from God; including sickness. There are plenty of examples when people use terrible sicknesses or afflictions which are directed towards the Glory of God; the greatest possible example being Christ Himself on the Cross. The Crucified Christ is an example of total humiliation and one who is completely forsaken. Nevertheless, Christ in this perfectly humble state is also the most powerful symbol of victory.

Like I said, only Catholic priests have the ability to heal through Jesus Christ.
Really?

So, unlike the ultimate salvation of the human soul, which the catholic church itself teaches may be saved in numerous ways and admits God’s mercy is not limited to, or bound up exclusively with, the catholic sacraments, ONLY catholic priests can heal through Jesus Christ

I don’t think so.

Another thing I thought about here - Orthodox priests are not catholic.

They have apostolic succession, there church is founded on Christ, and they have valid sacraments.

The Orthodox church is fully recognised by the vatican.

Do Orthodox priests count then? Not acording to you, as you said only Catholic priests have the ability to heal through Jesus Christ.

You seem to have forgotten a whole church of priests and people with full apostolic succession

There are documented cases of individuals praying for the resurrection of dead people. These dead people came back to life. People who were clinically dead, and had been in that state for several days. They were prayed for, and they came back to life. I think that The Quorum of Seventy collates, and retains those records. If they don’t they should be able to point you in the right direction. (The records go back a century and a half.)

During the sixties, movies were circulated amongst Baptist and Christian church congregations, showing people walking on water, and other miracles that Jesus did. This happened in India. Investigation was carried out by a professor at one of the Indian universities.

The Kansas City Prophets did document some of the healing that they did in their early years. The evidence suggests that in their later years, the healings that they performed were fakes/trickery.

There was an itinerant minister in Southern Africa during the gold rush, and afterwards, who routinely walked across rivers, when going from one mine to another, preaching the Gospel Message.

In the late Fifties and early sixties, several Hindu Gurus routinely carried out all of the miracles that Jesus performed.

Most such cases end up as anecdotes, without adequate documentation, because the person performing the miracle either doesn’t view it that way, or doesn’t see any purpose in telling others.

Another factor in not discussing the miracles with others, is that it can be a very bewildering experience to the person who performed them. (Imagine sitting down and talking with your shrink: “Doctor, I raised somebody from the dead last night.” It might be worse to discuss: “Doctor, I didn’t realize that she was asking me to resurrect her, when I talked to her ten minutes after she died. I did not realize that she was dead.”)

And did you know - you’re wrong! You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

From the Catholic Encyclopedia:
The practice of exorcism was not confined to clerics in the early ages, as is clear from Tertullian (Apology 23; cf. On Idolatry 11) and Origen (Against Celsus VII.4). **The latter expressly states that even the simplest and rudest of the faithful sometimes cast out demons, by a mere prayer or adjuration **(Mark 15:17), and urges the fact as a proof of the power of Christ’s grace, and the inability of demons to resist it.
I’ll bet you didn’t know that an exorcist was a minor order in the catholic church - and guess what, those in minor orders were not ordained priests.

And just about every religion christian or not has the equivolent of an exorcist or shamen. And they dont go running to catholic priests either.

And who do you think they are talking about? Since only CATHOLICS existed in those days. Remember, the Orthodox had broken off with the Catholic faith in unity with the pope in 1054. Like I said, only the Catholic priests have the power through Christ to heal.

You stated only catholic priests can drive out demons. I showed you that in the early days of the church exorcists werent even ordained priests to start with. I showed you the church fathers themselves said ordinary people can drive out demons.

You dont seem to know that orthodox priests have apostolic succession. They trace their lineage directly back to the apostles. They are recognised as having fully vaild holy orders and their sacraments are all valid and recognised by rome and your pope.

They have exactly the same succession and powers as catholic priests; to forgive sins, to consecrate the Eucharist, to anoint the sick - all recognised in full by Benedict and given to them when ordained by God. You need to go back to the drawing board.

**THE ORTHODOX DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE POPE, THEREFORE THEY DO NOT FOLLOW HIM! Who needs to go back to the drawing board? Good grief…🤷 **

It sounds like you do. You obviously don’t know your own church’s teachings regarding the Orthodox.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

I second this. I think OneTrueCathApos may wet himself when he finds out that the Orthodox also have incorrupt Saints. 😃

I know the Orthodox are EXACTLY like the Catholics, except for the authority of the pope…(Where are those tissues?)

No, they are not exactly like the Catholics. The differences are many, and would take up more than the characters permitted per post. Priests can marry, the Filioque, papal infallibility, view of Real Presence and rejection of transubstantiation are just a few.

A good summation of the differences may be found in this reprint from The Orthodox Christian Witness, Vol. XXVII (48), Vol. XXVIII (6) and (8), 1994. It’s by no means exhaustive, however, as the end of the article states.

You really need to do your homework before posting with such absolute assurance that you’re right, OTCA. It gives you and your faith a bad name.
