Which would you choose IF you could just pick one? Why?

Which would you choose to gift family and friends at Christmas IF you could just pick one?

For me personally, I’d pick the miraculous medal instead of the brown scapular, since the brown scapular is more about Carmelite spirituality, while the miraculous medal is more “universal”. Besides, I wear the white scapular of the Dominicans, which is already under the protection of Our Lady, so I’m covered there. 😜

Medal. More permanent, not made of wool, and universal in scope. No obligations but a good spirituality all around it.

Thanks for your response! I appreciate the explanation of “why” and look forward to what others have to say! I’m wanting to give some out - either sewing some brown scapulars or picking out some really pretty miraculous medals, but I’m not sure which to choose. ALSO I wear both but don’t enjoy the “clutter-y” feel of having both only neck & want to pare down to one… but not sure which to pick!

I wear the scapular medal mostly (exercising makes the cloth wet). I use the Redemptorist five-fold scapular, beginning with the Carmelite brown scapular when I was a child, and adding later the Marian blue scapular, the Servite black scapular, the Trinitarian white scapular, and the Vincentian red scapular. Being enrolled in four these, I daily say certain intercessory prayers and can obtain indulgences on certain dates. The red scapular is particularly for Fridays.

Saying the prayers with meditation each day has been a great spiritual benefit.

I wear the Medal.
I feel like it’s less conspicuous, but still “Catholic”, and I’ve had people comment on it.

So basically it’s a fashion choice—but still I wanted something about Mary.

The Miraculous Medal is for everybody.

The Brown Scapular is for those who want to practice Carmelite spirituality.

Unless they specifically want the Brown Scapular or to practice Carmelite spirituality, it’s best to give them the Miraculous Medal.

I think of the scapular as a personal “opt in” kind of thing. If someone wants to use one, they’ll usually obtain one for themselves. A medal (any) can be more gift-like and as someone said above, more universal.

I’m also a five-fold scapular person myself, so the brown would be redundant. 😁

I wear the MM. But there’s no reason why you couldn’t have both.

Are you able to wear both the Medal and the Scapular?
One can wear the Medal along with any other Scapular or devotional item one likes. It’s not an either/ or.

I wear a Miraculous Medal and a Brown Scapular because I aspire to be like the Carmelites.
Fauken wears a Miraculous Medal and a Dominican Scapular because she’s a lay Dominican.
You choose your Scapular(s) based on what kind of spirituality you wish to practice. Some people wear multiple Scapulars too.

I’d like to wear a scapular, but frankly find it very difficult to wear, especially with summer weather clothing. I realize that’s no excuse for those who feel called to wear it, but it just doesn’t work for me. I’ve worn the MM for about 50 years now, along with a Sacred Heart medal. The medals are conspicuous so I regard them as a “bit” of quiet evangelization. I visited the Rue de Bac site many years ago and really loved it. I also say the MM novena continually.
