My priest wants to offer the Extraordinary Form at our parish and asked me to find the proper book for him. It’s a big book that goes on the altar and costs maybe $200-300 or more, not the regular 1962 Missal that the parishioners use. I have searched all over, but I am confused, because I only see the Missal (which Baronius and Angelus sell for about $65) not this larger book that is the special version for the priest to use to say the Mass. Am I correct there is a specific edition for the priest and what is it called and where can we buy it? THANKS VERY MUCH!

Welcome, Rosella.

Basically you’re talking about an altar missal, which will be entirely in Latin. These go for about $300. Here’s one site that has them:

Let your priest know that people are praying for him out here. Can you tell us about your parish?

Yes…yes…yes…

The priest will definitely need that $300 missal to celebrate the EF with. he cannot celebrate the EF without it because it instructs him as he is saying Mass from it what to do…the priest’s actions- where to look, how to hold his hands…are controlled by the Missal.

He will also need to be fluent in understanding the Latin in the Missal- for it instructs him IN LATIN as what he is to do in many places. The ENTIRE Missale Romanum 1962 is in Latin- even the instructions in the beginning.

Has the missal you need.

God will bless you for your $300 purchase no doubt- and also for your endeavor in helping to further the spread of the EF of the Roman Rite- now blessed by the Pope.

Umm…

Ken is recommending the same altar missal I am, except he is recommending that you spend $310, and I am recommending $124 😉
