So, this is complicated.

I’m a recent convert to Catholicism (only 3 months now). As such I’m still getting a feel for days of obligation and stuff.

In my country (Japan) Jan 1st is a day of obligation that has not bee transferred to Sunday.

However, I am in Vietnam for New Years this year. I misread the Wikipedia page for Vietnam and thought that Jan 1st wasn’t a day of obligation, so I didn’t go to church today. I don’t think they offer English mass today anyway…

So was this a sin or not? I guess I should have done better research.

As you have previous threads indicating scrupulosity, please discuss this with your confessor when you get home and have him also tell you what you should do / how you should plan in the event of further travel.

I further note that it is not necessary to attend Mass in your own language. You can attend Mass in any language. I have a very limited understanding of Spanish but frequently attend Spanish Mass because it is offered at convenient times here. I have also been to Mass in Czech, Dutch, Portuguese, Italian, probably others that I forgot. None of which I speak, it’s not necessary to speak it.

Dude, this has nothing scrupulous about it, and don’t you think I’m working on the whole “ask my confessor” thing?

Given your clear confusion about whether or not you needed to go, there is no mortal sin here. I would advise that when possible, I would still attend Mass on a Holy Day of Obligation for my usual country.

Unfortunately, your question is one that is very typically asked by a person with scruples. Whether it’s scruples or just the fact that you are new to this, it is better for you to discuss it with a priest in your home diocese and not ask on here.

Asking such questions on here is likely to just get you a lot of confusing, conflicting, and possibly wrong information. This happened on your last thread also.

Please take these questions to your priest.

You cannot block people on this forum, unfortunately.

Also, please be aware that the FAQ states that you yourself need to respond in a civil way on the forum. You should not be asking a question and then getting mad at people who give you an answer that you don’t like.

There is nothing improper about suggesting someone should be discussing a particular matter with their priest. It is a standard reply on this forum and we often tell people to do that.

God bless.

It is spiritually healthy to keep your love for God, expressed in your concern for Mass obligation, in your mind. If you were in a location where the obligation was not enforced for this day, then bless you for your concern.

Let the encompassing love for God dispel concern for anything that distracts you from that.
