Okay here’s the excuse…My daughter was married last Saturday. Because of further obligations with the wedding, we knew we could only attend Sunday evening Mass. After breakfast with family, lunch with family/friends, taking people to the airport, we finally arrived back home exhausted at around 4:25. Around 5:30 I look at my wife and say, “we missed Mass.” Didn’t want to miss, I guess were just getting old. Mortal sin?

To be guilty of a mortal sin we need to freely choose to do something gravely wrong. While it is gravely wrong to miss Mass that doesn’t appear to have been your intention. Your intention appears to have been to actually get to Mass but in your exhausted state you lost track of time. Thus it would not appear that you freely chose to miss Mass and hence would not be guilty of a mortal sin.
