Hello,
I’m a convert, it’s been 4 years, but I’m often not very careful and there are still a few things I forget.
So I missed mass because I thought it wasn’t an obligation on this day and that I would go tomorrow (I know it’s stupid I forgot there was no mass on Friday). I even checked on internet to be sure but I understood incorrectly the informations I got. Also I had a lot of work to do to prepare my pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
Now that I realize it, I feel bad. I had my best Lent since my conversion (I overcame many things that kept me away from God and my faith has grown immensely) and I fear to be in mortal sin. Mortal or venial, I will surely go to confession as soon as I can, probably on Saturday or Sunday before communion.
So, is it a mortal sin considering it was a mistake that I would have avoided if I knew?

Holy Thursday is not a Holy Day of Obligation, so you did not commit any sin (mortal or venial) by not going to Mass. So you can put aside all anxiety and joyfully look forward to celebrating Our Lord’s resurrection on Easter Sunday.

As a matter of fact, Thomh, missing Mass because you thought it wasn’t an obligation, does not make you culpable! We can’t “accidentally” commit a mortal sin. Holy Thursday cannot be a day of obligation…as there is only one profound service, which is absolutely awesome and would not be able to fit all the people in the parish!

God has blessed you for having such a wonderful Lent!

Have a great rest.

Google can be your friend. Anytime you wish to know which days are HDOs and if your diocese has transferred them or not you can just google it.
rest easy on this one. no worries.

There is no obligation to assist at Holy Mass on Maundy Thursday.

:’( I missed it, Son’s car is in shop so he had to drive my car, and Hubby was gone so i had no way to go 😦

Missing Mass is not in itself sinful. We all miss more Masses than we attend. The sin is in neglecting Sunday/Holy Day Obligation, that is, failing to attend at least one Mass on Holy Days of Obligation without just cause (e.g. sickness, lack of transportation, hazardous weather, etc.).

So just to clarify, even if you deliberately did not attend Mass on Holy Thursday, is it a sin?

It is not a sin.

I did not attend. I knew when it was. I had transportation. I could have gone.

I did not. It is not a sin.

You do not have to attend Mass just because there is Mass.

Maybe see what you Diocese says about what are Holy Days of Obligation?
