I rarely watch television due to all the secularism with covering the election of the new pope. Being a military family, stationed overseas, I view information on EWTN via internet as much as possible. However, I have caught programs that interview priests who are asked questions about contraception, gay marriage, and pro-life issues, etc and they don’t have the explanations as given to us by the Church! Here is an opportunity for the world to see the view of the Church and (more then once) a priest was stumped on something I thought would be a slam dunk. One of the programs I watched was Hardball, the priest didn’t know how to respond regarding contraception. He was asked if the Church would reconsider their position given there isn’t anything in the Bible regarding contraception and society warrants contraception. The priest simply responded “possibly” and said to watch and see if a liberal pope were elected. I’ve also seen priests pitted against each other in pro-life issues and this is disturbing as they are our teachers and we don’t need their opinions just the truth as it has been given to the Catholic Church by Christ Himself!

If the priests can’t follow the the Holy See then how are the people they counsel to follow? What a positive message it would be if the communion of the Church were truly in communion with the Church. We look to priests to be our teachers and leaders. They should know these tough issues as they are everywhere.

My question is how can the public in America (where so much immorality is accepted) be educated if our priests and those representing the Church seem wishy-washy?

I have the same question.

This was so frustrating to watch… I’m not an expert in Catholocism, by any claim, but these are easy questions! They almost sound like the cafeteria Catholic I used to be! LOL

Catholic Answers, EWTN other grassroots efforts…

Actually there are very many good priests and bishops doing their jobs very well. The Church has had similar problems in the past and may have them again in the future.

I wonder whether we might not be living through the times envisioned in the parable or allegorical dream St. John Bosco described in May of 1862 (link)

I think it is important to at least let them know that they missed an opprtunity to spread the Good News rather than the (usual) self-aggrandizing comments that they make. Sent a note to their bishop and to them, the Catholic heirarchy doesn’t like bad publicity any more than anyone else.
BTW Don’t forget that secular media alomost always chooses the biggest nitwits around to be on their shows giving opinions. Most of them don’t want the truth, but rather the controversy these characters incite. 😦

That is a good point. One of the priests was Father O’Brien who appeared on the O’Reilley Factor… does anyone know anything about him??? If I remember correctly he is a professor at Notre Dame or at least a Catholic University. He was on the other side of Father Pavone in regards to the Catholic vote. Father Pavone had some great points and Father O’Brien appeared to be the devil’s advocate instead of uniting. It’s been hard to watch because I know my non-Catholic friends will be calling and pointing out the dysfunction to me. I have a difficult time trying to find convincing words to defend my faith… any suggestions???
