My husband and I have been asked by his brother to be godparents for their new son. They are Episcopal.

Question1: Are we allowed to be? My thoughts were initially who better to govern the spiritual life of a child than Catholics regardless of the child’s religion.

Question 2: The baptism is to take place on Easter Sunday, with a rehearsal and spiritual meeting the day before. Therefore, we will not be able to attend a Catholic Mass service on Easter Sunday. Is this considered a mortal sin? We would still receive communion during the Easter season fulfilling our Easter duty.

Thanks for your answers!

On question 2, you could always attend the Easter Vigil on the Saturday night. You would not then need to attend Mass on Easter Sunday.

You aren’t Episcopalian, therefore cannot be the sponsor, but can be a Christian witness to the baptism.

This is a question for your pastor. IMHO it isn’t a suffice to reason to miss Sunday mass. But it also isn’t my call. Your pastor can dispense you.

I Do question Saturday however because Vigil mass doesn’t start until like 8 or 8:30 pm. You should be able to make that.

That’s nice, but it is a separate obligation from your Sunday obligation. One doesn’t replace or fulfill the other.
