I need some advice:
my brother and his family are in town for only this weekend, and we’d love to see them. (They live 2000 miles away.) But they will not get into town until Saturday evening, when I would normally go to Mass.
I can’t go to mass Sunday as I have to work all day.(8 AM to 6 PM)
Is it a sin to miss mass this weekend? I can go Saturday morning, but that won’t meet the Sunday obligation.
Advise, please.

Any chance of taking Sunday off work? Can you see your brother after Mass or will he come to Mass with you and then go out/to your home afterwards? Any chance of organising to start or leave work an hour earlier or later to accomodate a Mass first or afterwards?

Just a couple of suggestions though if I’m honest, I’d probably miss Mass or go on Sunday evening at 7pm. Not sure if you have that option though.

I would take Sunday off or call in sick that day, both to go to mass and to spend the day with my brother.

Yes, it’s a sin to skip Sunday Mass in favour of spending time with family, mortally sinful if it meets the other criteria for a mortal sin.

CCC 2181. The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin.

Mass is only about an hour long.

You don’t have to skip seeing your brother…all you have to do is postpone it 1 hour. 1 measley hour.
And it came to pass, as they walked in the way, that a certain man said to him: I will follow thee withersoever thou goest. Jesus said to him: The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. But he said to another: Follow me. And he said: Lord, suffer me first to go, and to bury my father. And Jesus said to him: Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou, and preach the kingdom of God.

And another said: I will follow thee, Lord; but let me first take my leave of them that are at my house. Jesus said to him: No man putting his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
Luke 9:57-62

I would not call in sick unless I was sick. Isn’t lying a mortal sin also? :ehh:

Thanks very much for the good words.
I can’t take work off as it’s caring for a medically needy child, and I can’t change the schedule – she needs round the clock care.
But I can go to mass tonight and my brother and group hopefully can see us after that.

If all else fails I think there’s a late mass in Tagalog I can go to – though I wouldn’t understand one word in ten! But who knows, it might be an interesting experience.

Our sick days are combined with our personal days, so it is a sick day with less than 24 hrs notice.

Fine, call in that you are sick or not seeing your brother. Other countries have “mental health” days to prevent burnout. So, it is not a mortal sin. 🙂
