I am in an odd sort of situation. My family (non-Catholics) wants me (I am in college) to come on vacation with them to Ecuador after Christmas. However, during that time I will be in the Amazon for quite some time, and I fear that there will be no churches nearby. The city probably would not be a problem though. So should I just say no? What can I do so I avoid sin? (by the way I haven’t been confirmed yet).

It also makes me wonder, what did people do back in the day when travel took months, such as sea travels or colonist, or situations in wartime? Not a doubt in the Church, just a question.

It is not a sin to miss Mass if there is no Mass available.

Talk to your priest regarding a dispensation for the time period where a church is unavailable. When in the city, yes you should attend. You can probably find churches by Googling them or going to Masstimes.Org

but would it be a sin to go, knowing that there would be no available mass?

Are you going for the sole reason to not have to go to Mass since there won’t be one available? If you ask for a dispensation, the priest will guide you in the right decision.

According the CIA’s, The World Fact Book, Ecuador is 95% Roman Catholic. That’s higher than Italy, which is only 90%. You will likely have some kind of tour guide and chances are that guide will be Catholic. Ask him where he goes to mass on Sunday. Now he might tell you that he doesn’t, but I bet he will know where the nearest church might be. If it’s reachable go…otherwise, get a a dispensation from your priest.

Down there outside of many urban areas mass may only be held once or twice a year (or less) in some rural areas.

Drano you said you had not been confirmed yet. Does mean that you have not recieved first communion? Are you in a RCIA type class. The only reason I ask is that your family is non-catholic and if you joined the RCC on your own you should have received confirmation and communion and baptism (if needed) via that process . And if you are not officially in the church you are not under her rules so it doesn’t matter for you.

Thanks for the replies. I’m currently in RCIA and they say I will likely be confirmed come around Christmas (so not yet, but it may actually be right before I go). I have recieved baptism via a protestant church, but it was valid.
At anyrate, assume I am a confirmed person asking. The best bet is to ask my priest though I’m guessing.

Dranu sorry I called you Drano. OOOPPS. I agree with your guess, talk to him. You know, when I went through RCIA five years ago we had to set up an appointment with one of the priests and talk with them about a month before we joined the church, also it was a chance for first confession if you so desired to do so face to face. But I don’t know if you would want to wait that long. Have they bought tickets etc. If they have not you might be jumping the gun.

haha no prob, for some reason alot of people do that :D.

They have bought the tickets already though, but I don’t think they have worked out the times of the days when we’ll be where, but I think it might be a garuntee that the Amazon thing will carry through a Sunday.
