I am a college student who does not have a car. I attend Mass will abou 3 other students on campus. We meet in the lobby of one of our residence halls 15 minutes prior to mass. Two of them went home for the weekend. One of them went last night. I didn’t find out this the other student going to mass last night until Mass started ( i had waited 10min, went up to my room to check my answering machine . One of two who went home called my as walking down my hall to go to the lobby we usually meet at. Didn’t make it in time to answer the phone ) Did I commit a mortal sin? I plan on going to Confession some time during the week just in case.

No, you did not commit a mortal sin. I cannot drive, and do not have friends on Campus who would drive me to Mass. I have missed Mass once or twice because I couldn’t get a ride. It may be a good idea to find a more reliable ride to Mass.

This link to the Catechism of the Catholic Church may be helpful:

Scroll down to #1858 & 1859. Missing mass may be grave matter, but you did not do this purposefully. You wanted to go to Mass. So, and you’d have to ask your confessor, but I don’t think you committed a sin at all. The situation was a last minute thing out of your control. But, like the previous poster mentioned,it would be your duty to find the most reliable transportation to Mass as you possibly can. Do you go to school in an urban/suburban area? If so, maybe you could take a bus to a different Catholic Church. Just an idea; I guess you’d have to explore all options to prevent from happening again, to the best of your control.

Is there perhaps a Newman Center and therefore a student mass you can go to?

No. It is a Lutheran College with about 600 students. About 1/4 Catholic our Catholic Group only has 5 members.
