Today I read that in the mid-20th Century, a Melkite Catholic mission was founded in Birmingham, Alabama called the Saint Moses the Black Mission that was founded in order to reach out to the city’s African American population. Does anyone know the history of the mission by any chance? I’ve tried to do some further research, but from what I can tell the mission no longer exists. Did it not succeed in its purpose? Is there any Southron Melkite here that has heard of this particular mission and ever went there or had any interaction with it?

Thank you and happy Saint Stephen’s Day,
Constantine

Belated happy St. Stephen’s Day to you, as well, and an early Happy New Year!

Not sure about your question, though, will let someone else address it.

This article is about the founder more than the actual mission. There’s nothing else on Google, just some lifts from the Wiki article. I suspect that the mission is defunct; surely if it were still active, there would be more about it on-line.

Does any one know where to find exactly where the mission was located in Birmingham, St. George does not know.

You could try the Library to find Newspaper articles from that time.

Ya, I have already been to the Birmingham Public Archives, and could nit find any records of it.

Have you checked the Sabada Biography:
Sabada, Lesya. Go To The Deep: The Life of Archbishop Joseph Raya. Newton, MA: Sophia Press, 2006.

Check with the Melkite Cathedral of the Annunciation in Boston if you can’t find it otherwise. It’s the Sabada Biography that seems to be the source of the matter on Wiki…

also - check on the Catholic Directories for that period. Any good Catholic library should have a set you could review. Contact Spring Hill, Notre Dame, BC, Georgetown, etc., if need be. It should be listed.

The Melkite Diocese of Newton Massachusetts should have something on it - the Latin Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama may have something (though it may be any info the Latin church may have is in Mobile as Birmingham had not been erected as a separate diocese at the particular time)

Thank you for the help, the directories is a great start. The Sabada book is not good for historical research according to my professor. I told my professor that he stated in an interview that he knew MLK, and because Sabada’s book has no evidence, it is impossible to work with, but thank you gain for your help, you are awesome!
