Thank you for posting your question. It’s a good one!
I have spent about 6 months per year the past 3 years working in the mountains of Haiti. My wife and I are currently praying and raising support to make the mountains of Haiti our home - full time.
After my first trip, while reading the Bible, particular verses started to stand out (for a lack of a better way of putting it). So much so, that I started a list and my wife keeps a copy of that list. I told her that if anyone asks why I go to Haiti, here are your answers.
Luke 10:2
2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field
Mark 1:17
17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become (A)fishers of men.”
Mark 16:15
*
15 And he said to them, (A)“Go into all the world and (B)proclaim the gospel to (C)the whole creation.*
Romans 10:14-17
14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him (A)of whom they have never heard?[a] And how are they to hear (B)without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, (C)“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But (D)they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, (E)“Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So (F)faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Matthew 11:30
30 For (A)my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
James 1:22-25
22 But be (A)doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, (B)the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, (C)he will be blessed in his doing.
James 4:17
17 (A)So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
1 John 3:17-18
17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them,(A) how can the love of God be in that person?(B) 18 Dear children,(C) let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.(D
1 John 2:15
15 Do not love the world or anything in the world.(A) If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[a] is not in them.(B)
John 15:16
16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you(A) so that you might go and bear fruit(B)—fruit that will last
Isaiah 58:6-12
*6
“Is not this the kind of fasting(A) I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice(B)
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed(C) free
and break every yoke?(D)
7
Is it not to share your food with the hungry(E)
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter(F)—
when you see the naked, to clothe(G) them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?(H)
8
Then your light will break forth like the dawn,(I)
and your healing(J) will quickly appear;
then your righteousnessa will go before you,
and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.(L)
9
Then you will call,(M) and the Lord will answer;(N)
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
“If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
with the pointing finger(O) and malicious talk,(P)
10
and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,(Q)
then your light(R) will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday.(S)
11
The Lord will guide(T) you always;
he will satisfy your needs(U) in a sun-scorched land(V)
and will strengthen(W) your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,(X)
like a spring(Y) whose waters never fail.
12
Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins(Z)
and will raise up the age-old foundations;(AA)
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,(AB)
Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.*
Hebrews 6:10
10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.
Matthew 25:40
40 And (A)the King will answer them, (B)‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these (C)my brothers,[a] you did it to me.’
Matthew 25:45
45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, (A)you did not do it to me.’
If I ever find myself questioning if I should go back to Haiti, I start to recall some of these verses and then there is no question in my mind… I return.
Thank you for letting me share what motivates me to serve!
God Bless,
