I have spent about 6 months per year the past 3 years working in the mountains of Haiti. My wife and I are currently praying and raising support to make the mountains of Haiti our home - full time.
After my first trip, while reading the Bible, particular verses started to stand out (for a lack of a better way of putting it). So much so, that I started a list and my wife keeps a copy of that list. I told her that if anyone asks why I go to Haiti, here are your answers.
Luke 10:2
2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field
Mark 1:17
17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become (A)fishers of men.”
Mark 16:15

If I ever find myself questioning if I should go back to Haiti, I start to recall some of these verses and then there is no question in my mind… I return.

I’ve been going to one of the more remote Dioceses in Tanzania for the last several years.
I got involved mostly because the bishop from that diocese was at my parish 5 years ago doing fundraising for new school.
He also had a need for an engineer in a skill set that I have.My pastor arranged a meeting with bishop to discuss it. It became apparent that I HAD to go.
I wouldn’t say that I was excited to go the first time, but I recognized that I could do something that his diocese was in desperate need of, and that would be difficult and expensive for him to hire someone and purchase the correct equipment.
So I went, and it was while I was there that I determined that I had a calling to do this work. It was hard, but it gave me an inner joy and peace that I long for.
So I have been back there almost every year since, doing work in the Diocese.
This summer, I plan on bringing my two eldest children, a son who will be 16 and a daughter who will be 14. My son will assist me, and my daughter will help teach English in one of the diocesan primary schools.
My suggestion would be to find a mission where you feel you can do some good, and go. If that is what you are called to do, and your heart is open to it, you will find joy in it.
