I’m a senior in high school considering my options post-graduation. I don’t really know what I should do with my life, though today a thought crossed my mind-- what about Catholic missionary work, like aiding refugees in the Middle East/North Africa? Not for a long time, maybe a year or so. I dunno. How does one become a missionary, without being a cleric? Is that possible?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I’ve briefly searched the web, and it seems like most lay missionary services require a college diploma of some kind. I guess that disqualifies me, lol.

The mother of former President Carter became a missionary late in life and did a two year stint in the Peace Core. You need a talent or skill or perhaps a second language and they will train you for whatever mission. It would be a wonderful experience to put on your resume later down the road. Think about the Peace Core and develop a talent or knowledge that can be useful within mission work. Good luck.

Smead,

I commend your thoughts! Please do not give up after a internet search. As with all major decisions I think it would be wise to persevere in prayer and discernment. I am looking into mission opportunities for my teenage daughters right now as well. That is how I found this thread:)

I have been very disappointed with what I have found so far on the web. Many non Christian, non-catholic, and anti-catholic websites organizing mission trips for a week to a year plus, but not finding many catholic ones yet.

I am planning on making direct inquiries to places and organization that I think would fit my family needs. I am sure catholic diocese in many parts of the world would love to have the help from a motivated young person as a volunteer. They may be just to busy to set up a web site.🙂

I will start my own thread soon asking the forum for suggestions as well.

Peace and prayers to you
