Black leaders make a plea to Missouri voters. Regardless of whether Ammendment 2 passes or not women need to get the message that a little money today can’t begin to pay for the suffering they will experience tomorrow.
Our local newspaper recently featured the story of a young mother who went through three trials of IVF in order to have a child. She conceived all right but almost lost her life during the pregnancy because of severe kidney damage. Today she is on dialysis. The doctors at the university hospital have never seen anything like it. The sad thing is, this young mother will probably not live long enough to see her daughter grow up unless she receives a kidney transplant. It does leave one wondering if her kidney failure could have been precipitated by ovarian hyperstimulation. At least in this case the mother has a baby to hold in her arms. What consolation is there for a young woman who donated her oocytes and sacrificed her fertility for a little money? The irony is she will likely be too poor to afford expensive assisted reproductive technology when she is ready to start her family. Just another example of the rich exploiting the poor.

So says Yvonne Bailey, a black pastor from St. Ann, Missouri, in a new ad produced by Missourians Against Cloning. In it the mom implores, “Protect our daughters. Vote no on Amendment 2.” (YouTubed here.)
