I saw it this weekend, wondering what others thought of it. To be honest I found it a bit dull. Studio Ghibli’s animation is always eye-catching, but the story just didn’t do much for me.

I did find it interesting how Miyazaki confronted the challenge of creating a narrative from the work life of an engineer, who naturally spends most of his day sitting at a desk. The most notable answer was to create an imaginary relationship between Jiro and the Italian aviation engineer Caproni, which exists only in shared dreams.

The romantic sub-plot was necessary in my opinion, and I found it sad – but I’m not sure whether it has any basis in reality?

Japanese love dull stories.

As for swan song, I don’t know if that will turn out to be true. He’s had many swan songs so far, our second best anime director. (The best is of course Takahata.)

True, and I hope you’re right.

Alas, he is mostly retiring. (He’s retiring from feature-length films, but he’ll still be making more stuff)

I haven’t seen it yet, but I want to. I just saw more of his films for the first time yesterday. Before I’d only seen Spirited Away. But my floor had a marathon of his films, so I saw Howl’s Floating Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Nausicaä, and Princess Mononoke (and Spirited Away)

I’m pretty religious about getting the movies on DVD/BD as soon as they launch in Japan.

Must have original first print edition for the authentic, original market. 🙂
