I use mnemonics frequently to teach and to learn. Most of us probably know at least one mnemonic for remembering the names of the planets. Here’s one way.

My= Mercury
Very=Venus
Educated=Earth
Mother=Mars
Just=Jupiter
Served=Saturn
Us=Uranus
Nine=Neptune
Pizzas=Pluto

(When I was in school, Pluto was closer to the sun than Neptune so our saying was a bit different but I digress.)

Mnemonics can help us remember so many things. What are some things you remember using mnemonics? Maybe we can learn from one another.

Ha! I told my kids we did that stuff! 😃 I learned the planets this way:

Matilda (Mercury)
Visits (Venus)
Every (Earth)
Monday(Mars)
Just (Jupiter)
Stays (Saturn)
Until (Uranus)
Noon (Neptune)
Period. (Pluto)

Being a math person, the most famous one I know is:

-Please Parenthesis
-Excuse Exponents
-My Multiply
-Dear Divide
-Aunt Add
-Sally Subtract
This is for the order of operations

I learned this one in ninth grade biology, for learning the classification of organisms:

Keep (Kingdom)
Pots (Phylum)
Clean (Class)
Or (Order)
Family (Family)
Gets (Genus)
Sick (Species)

…although since then, I think there’s been some debate about certain organisms not fitting into one of the two accepted Kingdoms (animal or plant) and the ensuing necessity for another group called a Domain…

I sort of feel old knowing that something I learned in high school is quite outdated, and I’m all of 20 years old! :eek:

The Seven Deadly Sins!
Please, Lucy, Go Get Everyone A Slurpee:
P=Pride
L=Lust
G=Greed
G=Gluttony
E=Envy
A=Anger
S=Sloth

Essential elements for plant growth:

See (C = Carbon)

HOPKINS (hydrogen, oxygen, phosporous, potassium, iodine, nitrogen, sulfur)

CaFe (Calcium and Iron)

Managed (Mg = magnesium)

B (by = boron)

Mn (My = manganese)

CuZn (copper and zinc)

MoCl (molybdenum and chlorine)
So it reads C Hopkins CaFe Mg B Mn CuZn MoCl!

bodily fluids: (learned it from a Steve Guttenberg movie)

Peanut.Butter.With…Bread
Phlem…Blood…Water…Bile

Equations for transistors (learned from electronics classes in the Navy):

WWII ACE named GEB Beat his Children Badly

A (alpha) = Collector current divided by Emitter current

G (gamma) = Emitter current divided by Base current

B (beta) = Collector current divided by Base current

Also, having been in the Navy, I know some for boiler chemistry and various equipment functions that I’m unable to type here. I was an instructor and they came in very helpful. Usually the sillier ones were easy to remember.

When I originally wrote my post, I could only think of 2, but after writing the two down I remembered a few more:

For the nine planets
My Very Educated Mother Just Baked Us Nine Pies

For the Great Lakes
Huron Ontario Michigan Erie Superior

For Order of Operations (we used BEDMAS)
Brackets Exponents Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction

The musical notes in order for the Treble Clef (lines bottom up)
Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge

The musical notes in order for the Treble Clef (in the spaces)
FACE

The musical notes in the Bass Clef (lines bottom up)
Good Boys Deserve Fudge Always

The musical notes in the Bass Clef (in the spaces)
All Cows Eat Grass

Oh yeah the color spectrum

**Roy G Biv **(which is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet).

There are more in my head, that I’m sure will come to mind as soon as I hit send.

Yeah, I know some mnemonics I can’t share here :eek:

But the one I have little use for but am unable to forget is:

No Plan Like Yours To Study History Wisely

The royal houses of Britain: Norman, Plantagenet, Lancaster, York, Tudor, Stuart, Hanover, Windsor.

(I’m a USAn for goodness sake – Why do I have to remember this but forget where I left my pen!? :rotfl: )

Good point! I have not touched a musical instrument in about 4 years but I can remember every key strokes and the following

The order of the sharp keys in music:
Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle

and why do I remember that if I reverse the order I get the Flat keys?

Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles’ Father

But I cannot remember where I put my childhood photo albums??? Or where I put my keys (something I lose at least once a day…)

I found an easy way to keep track of the names of Walt Disney’s seven dwarves:

“Keeping track of all seven dwarfs is actually quite simple once you have mastered this simple mnemonic device: two Ss, two Ds, and three emotions. Two Ss: Sleepy and Sneezy; two Ds: Dopey and Doc; and three emotions: Happy, Bashful, and Grumpy.”

Source

I also remember these two:

For the Great Lakes
Huron Ontario Michigan Erie Superior

**Roy G Biv **(which is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet).

:o I recalled two easy ones that I missed:

OSAS-Once Saved Always Saved

TULIP

Total depravity
Unconditional election
Limited atonement
Irresistible grace
Perseverence of the saints

You forgot the last one “Variety”.

We learned
Kings Play Cards On Flat Green Stools

The Planets:
Mary’s Violet Eyes Make John Stay Up Nights Praying

Spelling arithmetic:
A Rat In The House Might Eat The Ice Cream OR a politcally incorrect way:
A Red Indian Thought He Might Eat Turnips In Church

I had one for the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, but I forgot it!

My Very Educated Mother Just Baked Us Nine Pies
OOPS!!! That should be
My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pies

And there is also the directions on a compass

Never Eat Shredded Wheat and Never Eat Salty Worms

In high school we learned the following to help identify the major nerves in the body

On
Old
Olympus’
Tipmost
Top
A
Fat-assed
German
Brewed
Some
Hops.

This was a Catholic high school run by the Fransiscans - OFM - Old Fat Men.

Now, If I could only remember what those nerves were…

25-pair telephone wire have two colors.
Like Blue/White, White/Blue, Orange/White, White/Orange.

I never had troubles remembering the main set of colors:
Blue Orange, Green, Brown Slate.

I needed a mnemonic to remember the tracer colors:

While White
running Red
backwards Black
you Yellow
vomit Violet

And the resistor color code

Bad Black 0
Boys Brown 1
R— Red 2
Our Orange 3
Young Yellow 4
Girls Green 5
But Blue 6
Violet Violet 7
Gives Gray 8
Willingly White 9

(a variation on Roy G. Biv)

KISS

Keep It Simple Stupid!

(Something I still have a hard time remembering!)
