I wanted to share a story about getting a Catholic Discussion thread started on one of the Protestant Fundie forums out there.

The thread was up to 1600 posts in a week and a half.

The moderators decided that the debate was not going the Fundies way, so THEY REMOVED THE THREAD. Without warning. Their ususal policy was to “close” a thread to additional posts, but to leave the material up.

Does anyone other than me equate this to a modern version of a “book burning”? I had over 400 posts in there, defending the Roman Catholic Faith, evangelizing and making a few dents in people. Now, I can’t even refer people to that thread for reference. All that material is simply gone.

That is why I will be hanging my hat here from now on, although I must confess that this is a bit of “preaching to the choir” for me.

I am just outraged that the Fundie message is one of such intolerance and censorship, and that these are the tactics to which they must resort to get their message out, and stifle the truth.

YES! I’ve heard about Harry Potter book burning on T.V., though it was done by protestants, not Catholics. There are lots of Catholics who like the books, and the Vatican approves them, but for those who don’t like them, they just leave them alone. Protestants however, burn what they don’t like. What I can’t understand though, is how they get the books to burn them. Do they buy them? If they do, then that’s pretty stupid. Why would they put money into J.K. Rowling’s pocket? They might be stealing them, but I don’t know, it kind of contradicts what they believe.

Greetings, GoodME,

I was following that thread, with interest. I think you and the other RCs were doing a fine job. I’m not surprised the thread was snuffed, but wonder what it was, exactly, that might have done it, at that point. Couldn’t have been more than a post or 2 after I last looked at, that it was removed. I noticed Orthdox Catholic was posting there, who, if it’s who I think it is, is a redoubtable poster, of the scorched earth variety. Maybe he tipped the scales. Or, maybe it was the quoting of Hislop. Even some Fundie sorts can’t take that.

Hey GoodME. My screename on that website was Christe elesion. I think the reason they shut it down was because they completely ignored the Eucharist debate because they knew they couldnt win. So when i tried to hammer it in that they completely lost the debate, and just ignored it, they realized that their beliefs were getting shaken. So they just had the thread completely shut down.

About Harry Potter, if I was the publisher those book burnings would just make me want to make more books. Hey at least they are selling right!

Can I know what particular forum this was and where can I find it?

Thanks,

Pio

I had a similiar experience with fundamentalist liberals and secularist anti-Catholics. They erased virtually every thread I ever posted. I was just to good. They couldn’t refute me, so they just erased me.

I need to recruit about 100 people to go over there and hose it up …

Whoops - thinking like a fundie, not a Catholic.

Don’t waste your time over there. Promote this site, not that one.

Faith_is_First:
the forum is www.christianity.com

However, be warned, the forum rules prohibit promoting catholic doctrine-if you can get anywhere with you debates they are liable to be deleted.
If I may be so bold…it should be called ‘anti-cristianity’.com

The only real reason to not allow to post a certain belief or faith would be because you know you can’t refute it and it shakes your faith…just my two cents

If you go over there, search the threads for “RCC” and “catholic”.

Also, search by user “GoodME”, and let me know here what you think.

Have you read their terms of service? It’s completely bogus, I didn’t read anywhere that says they’ll delete your post if they don’t like it, but they DID say that they weren’t responsible for any content in the posts, but that each post expressed the beliefs of the person that posted it, and it didn’t have to necessarily agree with the beliefs of Christianity.com.

i just went over there, and i hit my head on the bottom when i tried to dive in…
i’ve got a nasty scrape on my forehead now, thanks to you.

😉

You should just thread a post to invite anyone who thought that thread was interesting to stop by these forums for further debate! I can understand your frustration. I love this forum though, it is so refreshing from the frustrating ones out there. I consider Catholic Answers “home base”

I know how frustrating this is, but it must be uplifting and encouraging that you were able to plant some seeds.🙂

I first started posting apologetics about two years ago. It can sometimes be exhausting and feel a little futile at times, but it is so encouraging to know how many of us are out there, and it is a worthwhile cause, or the Holy Spirit would not be calling us. Thank you for posting this because it made me feel a little better that someone has had the same experience as me on similar sites.

we need to take turns flooding the site with promotions of this site… like one of us every day, register and post a link for Catholic Answers forums for great debate. That way if they kick us out one by one, at least some readers will see the links and hopefully spread the word that they need to come over and save the poor Catholics.😃

I guess I can post this here - it would get nuked over there.

Their terms-of-service reads like the “TOS” of Germany in about 1936.

I paraphrase here - “You may post materials, and as long as we like your materials, they will stay up. We reserve the ability to unilaterally destroy your work if we feel like it, and if you don’t like it, leave. We have this policy in place, because we are not clever enough to defend our goofy Faith practices. If we were clever enough, WE WOULD BE CATHOLIC.”

I think that summarizes the TOS over there.

Just an opinion.

As they frequently remove entire posts, these would not be up long. However, it would keep their mods busy.

It would be cool if they just completely shut the forums for a while, if we were to do this.

Like I said before, come HERE and promote THIS site.

If we are seen as arrogant and annoying, that certaintly isn’t going to get people to think charitably about Catholics. You guys think you can covert people in one easy step, but that is never going to work if you create (more) ill will between Catholics and other Christians.

Please leave flooding and other behavior for much worse sites than Christian sites. What is your end goal, and how are you going to achieve that goal by making every person that runs that site angry?

The correct plan of action- in my mind at least- is a strict discussion not about Roman Catholic beliefs, but a discussion with the members about the rules and regulations of the boards. They explicitly said topics about Roman Catholicism are off-limits. Ok. So make a topic discussing whether or not Catholics should be able to post about their beliefs just like other Christians.

There are few things Americans prize more than their beliefs in free speech, open debate and overall fairness. I believe this is the specific area you have to go after if you want to be heard. Americans like to consider themselves as good people, and I believe they are fundamentally good people. Take this route.

If you at least attempt the legalistic route first, I think we will all be better off. Incrementalism may be slow and painful, but it works.

I know nothing about the site in question but I am absolutely in agreement with the above portion of your post. People have a right to establish a forum and remove posts from other faiths if that is not what they allow or are about. Flooding and trying to bring down websites certainly won’t create admirers, friends or reflect well on Catholics in general. Good grief.
