Have you ever met a modern day Catholic Pharisee ?

There are some who take every law very literally and interpret them in very strict ways and the result is fairly nonsensical. To me it seems they have a very twisted sense of morality and a very harse view of what God is all about.

I ran into one a few years back. In a fund raiser, we had a prize of a stuff Pokemon toy, and some lady complained and wrote to the pastor that the kiddy show promoted black magic because in the cartoon show, some of the pokemon critters used magic as way to fight off the evil creatures.

What do you think of folks who interpret the rules so narrowly, so that things that may be perfectly innocent are viewed as evil and sinister.

There are enough real evil and truly immoral things going on that we do not need to read more into things than they deserve. I know there are many suble things that the media does to subvert society. But sometimes, I just have to say, please get a grip and please find some real issues to argue over, and lets not get bent out of shape over things that have nothing to do with evil intentions.

Of course the latest big deal is the magic used in the Harry Potter movies and the Lord of the Rings movies. I’m not sure how the Church views these movies. I’m sure the conservatives view these movies as subversive and promoting ungodly values. To me they are just metaphors for the fight of good against evil. But I’m sure to many others, they are Satanic or worse. What’s your view on these things.

I would guess that people like that are liable to be very annoying socially.

But I, though I often play video games that feature magic, see nothing wrong with their holding such views. Calling them “Pharisees” is too much.
