I recently had a conversation with some people who are protestant and they mentioned a prophet they follow. Is there such thing as modern day prophets? I had never heard of this and cannot seem to ind an answer.

Allie Paul teaches in his letters that within the church we are given spiritual gifts including preaching, teaching, serving, speaking in tongues, prophesying etc. etc. Not everyone has those gifts but we can never rule out that within the church today folks have the gift of prophesy.
Read 1 Corinthians 12: 1-11.
I’ve never heard of actually following A prophet so to speak so I think I would be guarded on that one. Did your friends tell you what this prophet says? One thing we need to do within the church is discern.
It’s common for Protestant churches to be based on modern prophets, but I believe the large denominations don’t, though individual congregations do sometimes. Ask about the teachings. Be specific and get specific answers. Some are pretty mainstream but you do need to know who you’re dealing with. If your friends are following someone who teaches another gospel, they need to be aware of the difference.
