Modern design is not always barren, and barren design is not always Modern

Do you agree?

There are churches that are Modern that I like. The church down the street from the U.N. (Holy Family Catholic Church) is nice. I don’t love the Risen Christ in place of a crucifix, and I would prefer there be an immovable tabernacle in the front and center of the church, but overall I actually like it.

But then there is barren design that doesn’t seem “Modern” in its conception, but just stark.

I remember the movie “Dogma” with the “Buddy Christ.” Getting rid of crucifixes is akin to a PR effort to make Catholicism less “harsh” to some, it seems. But the graphic representation has the ability to conjure feelings of remorse for our sins, and reminds us of the price of our sins.

Why?
It is because Jesus was resurrected that we have our faith, not because he died.

But again, our faith is not just about Jesus’ death. It is about the resurrection too.

It might be an oversimplification to say our Faith is about that, alone.

God’s Church on earth is about Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the saving victim, whose life, death, and resurrection has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life. It is about the fulfillment of God’s promise to His chosen people coming into the promised land. It is about a lot of things. The risen Christ is the only hope any of us have. True.

My opposition does not start with the thing itself – it does not start with that depiction in that church of the Risen Christ. It starts with the simple choice of design; to depart from the old and try something new. A lot of things change in the world, that’s fine. Why can’t Mass and churches be altogether different in their unchanging-ness. You know? That’s all. 😋

I know exactly why Catholics use the crucifix.

But his death isn’t the only thing that saved us in fact had he not been resurrected we would not worship Him.

There needs to be a crucifix. It does not have to be huge or affixed to a wall. My parish has a small one on the altar itself.

Perhaps we can discuss the main topic, this is getting off track.

Why?
It is because Jesus was resurrected that we have our faith, not because he died.
Christ’s resurrection was made possible by His death.

1 Corinthians 2:2
And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not in loftiness of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of Christ. 2 For I judged not myself to know anything among you, but Jesus Christ: and him crucified

But we were saved by his death and the Eucharist is that sacrifice.
Not to mention the fact that a risen Christ on a cross makes zero theological sense to most people, including myself.

As to the OP, no Catholic church is supposed to be, or feel, barren. The term used for modern designs us noble simplicity. If it appears barren, that is a failure.

“Save us, Savior of the world, for by your cross AND resurrection, you have set us free”

I don’t deny the rrssurection is a supremely important part of our faith. And I withdraw my previous question, it was not well thought out.
