Hi everyone. I’m no musical genius but I love lsitening to Masses, especially Requiems. I mean, of course, classical music that uses the Mass as its basis rather than strictly liturgical mass settings, though there is some overlap.

The other thread on the “saddest” requiem inspired me to post this thread. I enjoy more modern classical music (I understand that is technically a bit of an oxymoron) and I was wondering if anyone knows of some wonderful modern Masses or Requiems.

I am a fan of three in particular, which I will give some samples of here. Everyone else chip in!

*I like some of his plays, but I find this Requiem to bethe a bit too “broadway.” But I do enjoy this peice from it.

Hopefully these links work; I posted this from my phone.

Pitch in!

As I grow older, my thoughts turn to what music I should have at my funeral, and I think Fauré. His requiem can be performed quite adequately by a small choir, a few soloists and an organist.

Then I go to a few of my friends’ funerals and think - that’s someone else who won’t be coming to mine. Still, there’ll be plenty of room in the church - how about Mozart? His requiem needs a chamber orchestra, a choir and four soloists.

Then I go to a few more funerals and I think Verdi - a full orchestra, opera chorus and six soloists. If they start rehearsing now while I still feel reasonably fit, they might be ready in time.

Then some more of my friends die and I wonder if anyone will still be around to come to my funeral. And I think, Berlioz - Grande Messe des Mortes. That’s scored for a double orchestra, a choir of 600 and four brass bands. There won’t be room for me in the church - so I needn’t go.
