Modest needs organization

This is inspired by some of the threads about finances. I’ve seen several threads recently in which people have discussed finances, such as Dave Ramsey and budgeting, and finances and large families. I’m sure I’ve missed some discussions.

This post is not directed at any particular person or situation.

The modest needs organization helps people pay for a specific need that they can’t fund by themselves at that point. People can sign up to either donate or ask for funds. Recipients can give back if desired when they are doing better financially.

The average grant is between $750 to $1250.00.

They give grants, not loans, but everything has to be documented and there are income requirements. Not everyone likes to ask for help, and this is a way to get some specific task taken care of when things are tight. Rather than asking for ongoing charity/government assistance.

Founded in 2002, Modest Needs is a non-profit organization with a unique, threefold mission. Modest Needs exists:

To responsibly provide short-term financial assistance to individuals and families in temporary crisis who, because they are working and live just above the poverty level, are ineligible for most types of conventional social assistance but who (like many of us) are living one or two lost paychecks away from the kind of financial catastrophe that eventually leads to homelessness;

To lessen the burden of state and federal agencies charged with the care of the truly indigent by doing everything in our power to stop these at-risk households from slipping into the cycle of poverty, despite the burden posed by an unanticipated, emergency expense; and

To promote compassion and generosity on the part of individual persons living in the United States and Canada, the areas that we serve, by standing as a living testament to the power of human kindness to change lives, no matter how much (or how little) a person has to share.

That’s really neat.

A while back I had a conversation with some friends about the “Mutual Aid Societies” that used to exist, frequently among communities of immigrants, in the United States. This sounds a lot like that, just on a larger scale.

A while back I had a conversation with some friends about the “Mutual Aid Societies” that used to exist, frequently among communities of immigrants, in the United States. This sounds a lot like that, just on a larger scale.

That does sound like people got together to help each other in a way was mutually beneficial. It’s going to be holiday season soon and I’m sure people will have needs related to that. Such as, it seems like early January is a time many people hear about getting laid off (judging from my own experience). That, or the end of September for people who work for the government and won’t be funded for the next fiscal year (contractors especially).

It’s a blessing to have the resources to get or make gifts for family during this season.

If only they were revitalized. But they always be restored.
I believe supporting “paycheck to paycheck” families would the a cause a lot of people can relate and emphasize with.
