This is a sad case of a frightened teenager who compounded her mistakes.
FORT LAUDERDALE – A woman once charged with murder for placing her newborn baby in a backpack and throwing it into a canal was sentenced to probation Thursday after pleading no contest to a reduced charge of manslaughter.

Under a plea agreement with prosecutors, 23-year-old Aimee Lee Weiss could eventually have the case erased from her record if she stays out of trouble during the three-year probation period. If she violates probation, she could go to prison for 15 years, according to the state attorney’s office…

Please, don’t bother reading the crude, vulgar, heartless comments posted in reaction to this judgment. While it is understandable one is shocked there is no excuse for lacking charity. This girl, after all, has been raised in a culture which taught her “unwanted babies” are garbage. If anything, she illustrates the hypocrisy of American justice which convicts a young woman for doing essentially what licensed medical practitioners do more than 3,000 times a day with impunity.

this girl got off easy…she should of been thrown in jail not put on probation!

The article doesn’t say where she spent the years between ages 17 and 23. If any part of it was in jail, then she has served time, which will go on her record and follow her all her life, as will the conviction of man slaughter.

Also, she may have been telling the truth about the baby being stillborn but went for the man slaughter charge on the advise of her lawyer, which was a wise move. She may have been wrongly convicted of murder and spent the rest of her life in prison, which would be a miscarriage of justice.

Unless we can say we know she deliberately killed her newborn child we cannot say she deserves to be in jail.

  1. Get pregnant
  2. Hide pregnancy
  3. Give birth at home
  4. Put baby in backpack
  5. Take baby in backpack to canal
  6. Throw baby and backpack into canal
  7. Go home
Gee does anyone think she did not know what she was doing? Killing a child at the worst. Defiling a body at the least.

Either there is right or wrong or there isn’t. There’s no excuse for killing a baby, no matter her circumstances. What’s the point in having laws if people get off for being weak willed and emotionally distraught. She’ll probably be eligible for free counseling now, to help her work through her grief and guilt.

Was there an autopsy? Didn’t it show a cause of death?

That’s always my first thought when I hear of stuff like this.
I’m sure an autopsy can determine if the newborn was alive when thrown in the water.
That’s a GREAT question! I wonder if they did one or not.

Pax vobiscum!

This is disgusting that she is only charged with manslaughter. Great work, sheriff’s office, on not Mirandizing her properly. How hard is that to do? What she did was pre-meditated murder, which usually carries a life sentence.

In Christ,
Rand

Of course they did an autopsy. It would be mandated in any suspicious death. I would put this death into that catagory. They can definately tell by examining the lungs if the baby tried to inhale water or not. I’ve watched enough of the Discovery channel to know that.

Interesting how the article stated shw “placed the baby” into a backpack. That implies a certain degree of gentleness. Didn’t she “stuff” it in or more neutrally “put” it in?

This is so wrong. This is not punishment. II suspect she had not been held in jail all this time as her sentence would have included “time served”.
