Folks I’m involved in the gospel reflections and the bible studies we have at my parish. I can honestly say, that I’m a major voice over there. I’m so embarrassed to say this. The pastoral associate told my parents about my skills in knowing the connection between sacred tradition and the bible. My parents tell me that a masters in theology will ‘up my credentials’. I don’t need a theological degree do I. My parents say to me, “you know more about Church law then we do.” And I only repeat what I learn here on Catholic Answers. What do I do. I don’t want to go back to school.

You’re gonna be in school, in one fashion or another, for the rest of your life anyway. It might as well be studying something you enjoy.

But it is your your life. I say do not do this no matter who says you should, unless it is what you want to do. Do not let anybody push you into it. just my :twocents: since you asked

Sounds like you have a gift, but it doesn’t mean that you have to go back to school and switch careers in order to use it. I am studying the faith by coming to this website daily and reading different books at night, but I haven’t decided whether or not a degree is the next step. However, I am finding that by studying, and praying for the right opportunities to evangelize, I am helping others with my knowledge. How do you feel about your current profession? Do you believe it is what God wants you doing?

I like where I am actually. I just to help renew the Church basically.

I’m focused on violin right now.

How old are you and what would you like to do with your life?

I recently finished my masters degree in theology and I did it because I simply love studying theology. I also did it because I was not successful getting a job in teaching or ministry without it. Is that what you want to do for a career? If so, a degree would give you a definite advantage.

There are many things I learned as a theology student that any Christian who was not a full time student also could have learned. So, if your goal isn’t career oriented, keep in mind that you can always learn a lot on your own. Many people who do not have my educational background know a lot more than I do. However, from a knowledge standpoint, having access to a catholic university library for at least some period of time can be very helpful. I wish I were still able to check out more books. And in getting a degree you have the opportunity to go more in depth in particular areas. You just have to decide what it’s worth to you.

“to up your credentials” isn’t what I’d consider a good reason for studying Theology. A Master’s degree isn’t easy to get, and it is even less easy to pay for (especially at a private college- which is the only place you will find a good theology program). If you love theology, and you want a Master’s degree, you make good grades as an undergrad (especially in writing classes…a class or two in philosophy and history wouldn’t hurt either)
