Hello all,

I am entering a traditional Benedictine convent in June, God-willing, and Mother suggested I see if I could find a copy of the Monastic Diurnal to bring with me as their remaining copies are all getting very old and worn out. The copies at the convent were purchased used and are of the 5th printing, just before the Council.

I found a very good copy of the Monastic Diurnal at Loome Booksellers (I’ve been blessed to live near such a treasure trove for Catholic book lovers 🙂 however it is the 3rd edition, printed in 1955.

Does anyone know if there are any fundamental differences between the printings that would mean that this would be an unusable copy for me to use in choir?

There were major revisions of the Roman Breviary and the calendar in 1960-61, and some of these changes applied to all religious calendars as well, such as the deletion of certain feasts. Many of the changes applied to the celebration of matins, which, of course, wouldn’t apply to a diurnal. If you don’t mind buying overseas, I found this on-line:

God bless,

Fr. Boyd
