Anybody heard of John Michael Talbot?

He has a new album called ‘Monk Rock’. I just downloaded ‘Gloria’ from iTunes. Sounds GREAT! Never knew a Monk could rock out.

I may just go back and get the whole album. Only 10 bucks.

John Michael Talbot has long been one of my favorite Catholic musicians. He is an incredibly gifted guitar player. One of my favorites of his is “Brother to Brother” with Michael Card.

$10 ! I’ll tell my friends…I bought the Monk Rock CD at the concert for $17. My favorite song there is Kyrie. I ushered at the concert and had a nice time.

Going back to his roots I see. He used to be in a rock band before he converted.

The rock group JMT was in during the mid 70’s was Mason Profit

John Michael Talbot has a Monestray in Berryville, Arkanasas, near Eureka Springs in the Ozarks. It is called Little Portion Hermitage. You get the feeling you are in Assisi when you stay at the retreat house. The Chapel is amazing and there is also a Portiuncula. .You can go to the Monestary which is very beautiful and very hidden, for Prayer and Celebration of the Eucharist.
He began an Order that includes:
  • The Brothers and Sisters of Charity-(nuns and monks)
  • Celibates ( women and men )
  • Family Units ( home schooled, etc)
They follow a combination of Fransiscan and Benedictine charism & spirituality.
They all live in Sketes on the property.
They grow and raise most of their own food.
There is also a Secular Order, with members world wide. Many live in homes located within walking distance on the hilly grounds near the retreat center.
The Order has Canonical approval from AK Diocese and Rome.

JMT, by the way, has married in late 1999 (?), having changed that “Rule” of his Order.

I was there for a week, for three days of private retreat and then 3 for a JMT guided retreat in August 2001.
There has been dissension among some of the former members regarding how the Vision has changed so dramatically and how the Order has evolved according to their JMT’s desires.
For further info there are alot of websites dedicated to the pro’s and cons of this Order.

What are some other hot tunes by JMT?

What else on "Monk Rock’ rocks?

I’m gonna download them from iTunes for 99 cents each.

I listened to the clips–that’s he’s fabulous!! I’m really excited–our church’s women’s retreat is going to Little Portion Hermitage this year; it looks beautiful.

CP, thanks for the recommendation - I’ll check it out. 🙂 I am a newcomer to contemporary Catholic music, but for what it’s worth, I love many of JMT’s songs. One Bread, One Body; We Are One Body; No Longer I; In God’s Peace; Holy Darkness; Glory and Praise to Our God and a quiet version of Be Not Afraid. I’m not as fond of Woman, Table of Plenty or his version of Here I Am, Lord as I am of some of his others.

Another one to look at on itunes is Matthew Baute. (Angels Sing, Sing Out and Praise His Name and Mother’s Prayer - a prayer by Mother Theresa - gorgeous)

Oh, and Matt Maher. (More of a “rock” style than the softer Baute and JMT songs. You Know Who I Am - wow! And Your Grace is Enough and Isaiah 61)

And Jesse Manibusan’s version of “Be Not Afraid” is very good - energetic and lively.

I love i-tunes - nice to only buy the songs you like and it’s great to be able to hear some of what they sound like before you buy them.

Do you know of any other site on the internet where you can buy music that’s in our modern missals the way you can with i-tunes? I joined the choir and i-tunes didn’t have all the titles that I need to practice at home.

Happy listening!

I haven’t listened to Monk Rock yet, but I have 2 other of JMT’s CDs - City of God and Table of Plenty

OT but, can anyone recommend any music written for guitars and suitable for beginning players? Not only John Michael Talbot, but any other Christian rock or folk singers. Here’ a link to a thread that I started about guitar lessons on CA’s “Family” forum. Thank you very much!

I have several of JMT’s recordings, and all of the Mason Profit albums. It’s kind of neat to see the journey he was on back when he (and his brother) were in Mason Profit. They always snuck one or two religious songs on their albums.

Talbott’s rock credentials go way back. He and his brother Terry - who is now, I believe, an evangelical - were the core of the late 60s/early 70s band Mason Profitt of “Two Hangmen” fame. I saw them in concert once and they were terrific.

Just downloaded ‘One Body in Christ’.

It COOKS!
Imagine you are sitting in a coleseum, the altar and candles are set up in the center. You are surrounded by thousands of Catholics, have just been part of a full procession of the Eucharist with this same group, Mass begins with 3 Bishops, countless Priests - with Seminarians as servers. The Bishop is incensing the Altar and you hear JMT begin One Body in Christ, and the entire congegation begins Mass to sing this as the Entrance Hymn. Well, I was there Saturday at the Arkansas Eucharistic Congress. It was a Mass I will NEVER forget!

After the Eucharist, for meditation JMT sang a song about “Come home to a Father who loves you, come home to a Mother who prays” I wept it was so beautiful.
