He doesn’t want you to record, he won’t hand out lecture notes, and he won’t even let you take your own notes? What kind of professor is he?

I’d say you definitely need to talk to him outside of class about how he suggests you learn the material for the course. Ask whether the tests will focus more on material found in the text(s) or on things said in class, and try to explain that you feel that you need some kind of record of what is said in class in order to study for the exams. A good conversation with your prof should solve some of your problems.

On recording vs not recording–he asked you not to record; don’t record. I see it more as an issue of politeness and respect than anything else. (And arguments about whether or not it’s legal to record your prof behind his back really aren’t helpful…I’m pretty sure it would negatively affect your grade if he were to find out you didn’t honor his simple request, even if you could prove to him that it was legal to do so.) If you think you’ll need help filling in the gaps of your notes, form a study group with classmates and pool your resources. I agree with a PP who said that recording lectures is a bad (and wayyyy time consuming) way to learn/study.
