Hi folks,
Are there any books that you would recommend on Catholic moral theology that are not single issue, but give a good analysis overall?
I have looked at reviews online and most have some criticism related to unorthodox views of the author or they have made comments contrary to the Church in some way.

What are the good books out there that provide a good grasp on the topic ?
( Yes, I know about the Bible, the CCC, and the papal encyclicals !)

Thanks
Tim

I would actually recommend a tape series by Fr. Brian Mullady which can be purchased online just Google his name.

Tim:

This book isn’t Catholic, but it’s a very serious work on ethics and morality, and comes Highly recommended:

**A Code of Jewish Ethics **
by Joseph Rabbi Telushkin
available at Amazon
Click the link at Dennis recommends - It’s easier

Ignatitus Press has the Summa Theologica ($155 in Softcover - 5 volumes)

International Catholic University has Distance learning/online couses available:
home.comcast.net/~icuweb/icu3.htm and
home.comcast.net/~icuweb/credit.htm

The two lists above contain courses that should be able to give you a thorough grounding in Moral Theology. If you review the coursework, you should be able to arrive at one or two that will provide you with a systematic approach to moral questions…

If you can only take one, try the one from Dr. John Haas - Introduction to Moral Theology It’s on both lists.

I hope this helps.

Mosher, do you know if Fr. Mullady has done anything on “Pastoral Theology”?

This is for someone else, but it would be a big help to him.

I have found this book by Willam E. May to be an excellent resource which presents the basic moral teching of the Church as well as the foundation for the teachings. It integrates references from the CCC and material from JPII’s encyclical Veritas Splendor.

Introduction to Moral Theology – by William E. May

I wholeheartedly agree. This is easier to digest than what is perhaps the BEST summary of Catholic moral theology available,Way of the Lord Jesus (3v.) – Germain Grisez

Also good, but harder to digest than May’s book is Fulfillment in Chirst – Germain Grisez and Russell Shaw

I would give a big “Thumbs UP” to May’s work as well. It was one of my textbooks in my Moral Theology.

If you are looking for practical Moral Theology, how Catholic Moral Theology is put into practice (the 'do’s and 'dont’s), pick up a copy of Jone’s “Moral Theology”

That book was written as an aid to priests in Confessionals to help them understand if a particular act or behavior was sinful and what some mitigating factors might be.

Father Mullady is a friend and a former professor and spiritual director of mine. He has written or given talks on various topics. I am not sure if he has done something on the topic that you are looking for but I have a recent list of all of his CD series. Unfortunately it is currently at my girlfriends home so I don’t have immediate access to the list.

The 3 volume series by Grisez is exactly what OP seems to want. I am really blessed to have read it. I can’t recommend it highly enough. The only drawback, so to speak, is that is requires a serious amount of time to read. The first and the second volumes are more valuable than the third, if cost is a consideration. Also, I’d read them in order.
