Can someome please explain to me why our Catholic priests are telling the Catholic youth of America that Kissing ( not on the cheek) is not a sin???

From my understanding of chastity and the role of purity when it comes to one’s body I have always seen it that intimacy is supposed to be reserved for marriage. Why then is it a sin to lust over another who is not a spouse while it is ok to kiss one who is not.

Deep, passionate kissing is wrong. I don’t think there is much wrong with a simple peck on the lips. It’s a sign of affection, yet it doesn’t evoke lust or arousal.

I am not talking about simple pecks on the cheeks and lips,
but then why do our priests give people the idea that passionate kissing is ok.

I went through 12 years of Catholic schools complete with old style, ruler-wielding nuns and a priest with a brogue. No one ever said anything about kissing being sinful.

Why would it be?

Waiting for marriage to kiss someone sounds at best like an invitation to disappointment.

There’s nothing wrong with kissing in and of itself. It’s just when it gets your motor running, like during a heavy makeout session so to speak, it has a tendencey to evoke lust and makes it easier to give into temptation and go farther than you might want.

My girlfriend and I used to think as long as you kept your clothes on and didn’t touch where a bathing suit would cover, you were good. She then went to a Chritopher West lecture (on Theology of the Body) and we also read some stuff on chastity. We realized that compared to most people we were being saints, but in reality we weren’t being very chaste at all. Staying chaste has been awesome actually. It’s really helped us to grow and mature.

If it’s done as a sacrifice, offering it up for all those who do it and go too far, it can actually be quite a spiritual gift and cause the couple to be even closer by the time they get married. While this isn’t for everyone, it can be quite beneficial for the right-minded couple.

Nikki, can you give a specific instance of what a priest actually said, in context, and can you give a source for your assertion? Surely you don’t mean that every priest in America is telling kids that passionate kissing is just peachy keen.

I think that if it is true it might be one of those things where the Priest would rather they kiss then do other thinks which might be much worse on the moral scale.

There is morality and chastity in the US??? We can only hope the way things are going these days.

Seriously, passionate kisses are no good and I can see them being a sin. but in other countries a slight kiss on the cheek is not a sin, but a greeting and indeed a very affectionate thing. We here in the US do not know affection and we mistake it for what is really lust. That is why immoral people find it acceptable to kiss passionately.

I really dont think making out by itself is a sin. A temptation…yeah probly, I guess it depends on circumstances. If you know you’re strong in your convictions (and your partner is too), I’d say it’s harmless. If not, l’d say ease up on it.

My girlfriend and I do so and often horizontally, I’m not going to deny that, but nothing is going to happen and we both accept and know it.

As human beings we crave physical contact. When we’re touched, especially by someone we care about, hormones are released and we feel good. It’s just part of that little mechanism we were given to make sure we’d find a mate. Physical contact and sexual arousal are linked, but the latter can be controlled in the event of the former.

You know what’s better than making out? IMHO, backrubs (shirts on you perverts) and just lying on a couch together, under a blanket and watching a movie.

when I close my eyes, all I hear is “Unstoppable!”

See, here’s the thing. Lust when making out is pretty much a given and that’s why it’s a sin. That passion you feel is lust when it is outside of marriage. You can’t make out without getting all hot and bothered, especially horizontally. Hips start to move around and stuff and that’s no good. Stick to watching movies on the couch.
