Democracy is the worst form of government. Except for all the others that have been tried.
Democracy is 2 wolves and 1 sheep ‘voting’ on what’s for dinner.

FYI the USA was not founded as, and as far as I know has never been legally coverted to, a democracy. I think it’s a shame that so many people understand it to be a democracy and understand why as politicians, including the presidents, will get on national TV and speak about the country as it being a democracy.

It is a constitutional republic (emphasis on constitutional). In a constitutional republic you can’t vote to have me for dinner, or at a minimum I have the right to own and carry firearms… so when you come for me I can protect myself.

“Liberty is a well-armed lamb.”

I think the people who think the US is a democracy don’t understand the definition of democracy, beyond something in which voting takes place, and haven’t thought about it beyond that. In any case, a properly limited government is more important than the actual structure of the government.

Back to the original question, “How is it the governments job to decide what is morally correct for a country?” It is every person’s job to decide what is morally right for them to do, and to uphold justice, including those in the government who have particular tools for doing so, and we who do not. Likewise, no-one can morally enforce justice by acting immorally themselves, including the government. If I lie about something, it is wrong regardless of what it is about, but until I tell a lie that will bring someone to harm (myself excluded), you have no right to force me to tell the truth, only to ignore, correct, exhort, or rebuke according to the circumstances. Similarly, government should not outlaw all lies, but only those that people have the right to force the truth on, such as when a person’s life or liberty depend on it. The authority of government comes from everyone, and it cannot rightly do anything that those apart from government cannot rightly do.

A Constitiutional Republic is the form of government that you have. Put in power by democratic means. That is, you are a democracy that has checks and balances put into place to prevent the people themselves running the joint.

There are different types of democracy. Yours is a representaive democracy.

And the democracy quote earlier was, I think, attributed originally to Churchill.

You dont’ see a difference between a constitutional republic and a representative democracy?

God Bless,
Bill

Unless I’m mistaken you are:
  1. A republic with a constitution, and in addition you have…
  2. Democratically elected representatives of the people in the legislature.
You also democratically elect the head of the executive.
