ok guys 🙂 i need your help! this is again involving “spirituality/occult” (it just seems to be dominant around me everywhere…rather creepy lol  ) anyways, im hoping to get confirmed this year and i need a sponsor. i was going to have my dad do it but theyre living overseas (i was hoping it might bring him back to Church and my mom with him as well). so i asked my aunt and her husband if they would do it. at the time i thought that they were an upstanding couple and a great example of a good, Christian family.
there is (yet another) family friend who is a medium, and she is close to my aunts and uncles (they grew up together) and this woman claims to talk to a ghost thats haunting my aunts house (after my 3 yr old cousin claims to have seen a “monster”…lets not get into the fact that kids have imaginations…and shes 3…) and that shes also had contact from my grandfather and another family friend who died tragically in a motorcycle accident.
also, my family tends to hold on to things that happen until, well, forever…like when princess di died she was still dying three months later in all their conversations if you understand what im trying to say. so they have a hard time letting go of my grandfather whos been dead for 20 yrs and the family friend that died…like they want something more. theyre getting mixed up in this medium stuff like its gonna go out of fashion. its constantly the medium said this or she said that. ive already given them an earful, being a Catholic strongly against anything occult and they just dont want to listen (which is their choice).
now im thinking that i dont want my aunt (not sure of my uncles stance on all of this medium stuff) to be my sponsor because shes so easily swept away with all this stuff that she wants to believe…i want someone who is more firm in their faith…someone who knows why you dont meddle in anything of that sort.
any thoughts??

thanks!

Just tell the RCIA director you need a solid, devout Catholic to be your sponsor. There’s almost always tons of volunteers who are willing to help out in this capacity. Be very humble about this and very grateful to whomever they assign you for taking the time out of their lives to lead you to Christ.

though how do you think i should go about telling this to my aunt (i had asked her back last year before all of this shinanigans happened).

You’ve got a tough job here.

Here’s a script:

Dear Auntie, you do know I love you, don’t you? I don’t want you to feel rejected, but I need my Confirmation sponsor to be someone who stands firm in the Faith. The Catechism says we are to avoid all forms of divination, and using a medium is one. Because of this, I have to retract my invitation to you and find another sponsor. It doesn’t mean I love you any less, and I still want you there when I am Confirmed.

The CCC reference is
2116 All forms of *divination *are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to “unveil” the future.48 Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

Hope this helps. I know it will be tough.

Ruthie
P.s. Welcome to the Church!

Thank you so much Ruthie! actually, i am a cradle Catholic (suprise!) but my parents didnt take responsibility in making sure i had all my education and First Communion as a kid and all that…well, at least until i went to Catholic school from 7th grade until 12th, and its been a very amazing and soul-searching adventure in coming back to the Church where i KNOW im home! i truly appreciate the welcome none the less:) and all that you said! thank you again for the reference from CCC, i will now let my family know that as well (hehe printers are a blessing!).
could you please pray for my family as well and that my parents come back to the faith? 🙂

Pax in Christ!🙂
