goofyjim: You have SSA, and that is a burden to be sure. Yes, it is disordered, and it is an inclination to sin, but is it really different in that regard than the heterosexual lust that I myself feel, and that many (if not MOST) heterosexual’s feel? When we hear that a mindset is “disordered”, we must always remember that the Church teaches that
humanity is a disordered species since the Fall. Not a single human person (except for Mary, as Jesus is a Divine person) has been without this inherent disorder in nature, and only God’s Grace can help us to be free, even in the case of Mary.
Remember, the Church doesn’t require more of you than it does anyone else, though your particular cross may make certain requirements harder. Even so, that is an occaision for GREATER Grace, not less. You will struggle, and you will occaisionally fall, but that is part of being human, and God Loves us unfathomably. Keeping that in mind there are only two things that you must not allow your burden to do: 1) make you despise yourself, and 2) make you turn away from God. So long as you can keep from those things, and keep working for good and with God’s Grace, you will be more blessed than the angels, and even many of your fellow human beings.
You’re not called to despise yourself, and you’re not called to hurt yourself in pursuit of society’s idea of what’s “right” (which includes both the rabidly pro-homosexual and the rabidly anti-homosexual positions), you are called only to be Holy, and that means fighting temptation, not destroying who you are. Embrace who you are without embracing sin (and it is clear that you know where that boundary is, and others here have pointed it out as well), just as God embraces you. Live a chaste life dedicated to God, and you will be leaps and bounds ahead of 90% of heterosexuals without a doubt.
If you’re interested, there is a devout Catholic blogger who goes by
Dreadnought who is in a similar situation. He is both inspiring and humble, and you might find a lot of benefits to reading his writings. Even though I’m heterosexually attracted, I check his website frequently because it is an inspiration for all of us who suffer from disordered sexual appetites, i.e. every human being I’ve ever known! (WARNING: He does use what would be considered foul language in the U.S., and sometimes posts images that could be considered obscene by those offended by Michaelangelo’s “David”)
Peace and God bless!
