Is it okay to watch copyrighted materials on youtube? Or is it only moral to watch completely original stuff that an everyday person uploads?

I would say that watching copy written stuff on Youtube is wrong. I say this based off of the fact that movies are not to be reproduced - hence the nice little warning message that we always have to sit through before getting to the menu screen of our movies (or the start of the previews for you VHS people). As that federal warning makes clear it is illegal to replicate the movie about to be watched. I would assume that putting it on Youtube is going to be of the same moral worth as it would be if a person took a movie and made a copy of it via DVD burner so that they could add it to their collection.

I suppose the same applied when Napster used to be a free web site where people could download tons of copied music for free. We know that it was eventually shut down in that form because the government said that it like stealing since no one was paying for their copies of music. Hence this is why there are new pay sites like Napster and Itunes or any other that is out there.

Anyways … I think that it is not morally alright to do. You know in your heart that if Youtube did not exist you would be stuck going to Blockbuster or some video store to rent it, paying some thing for it, and then watching it.

Watching things like that on Youtube do not require us to be honest consumers and actually pay for what we are about to watch. Rather it allows us to get some (arguably little though) copy written stuff for free.

If it is your own stuff, then it’s ok to upload it to YouTube. You are also putting it into public domain. However, taking other copyrighted material and putting it on YouTube is definitely wrong.

As for watching it, how do you know what’s illegally put up there or not? I do see quite a lot of copyrighted materal already’s been removed so what’s there to watch that’s sinful?

I agree, I think that Youtube does a good job of getting illegally distributed or copyied stuff off their site. So I don;t think that there is much of a threat to the stuff on Youtube - a least copyright wise.

Youtube usually gets rid of that…

I say don’t be scrupulous, I mean, if you’re doing it to avoid spending money then that’s stealing, but if you’re just messing around killing time then I don’t think it matters.
