I wonder if you’re acutely sensitive to criticism of your character and indignant long afterward, is that excessive pride?

My gut reaction is - Yes…

Also it seems to smack of insecurity.

Peace
James

A great resource to help you with this can be found at the website:
www.rcspiritualdirection.com
then look up root sin and virtue.

This is a symptom of pride, one of the identified root sins.
Thank you. Pride and insecurity do go hand in hand. I honestly don’t know how to eradicate this extreme sensitivity. Even the mildest remarks can shake the foundations of my self-worth. After I’m insulted the indignation lingers and lingers and it’s corrosive. I think when you’re thin skinned you feel raw and exposed and everything stings; I feel like too much of my energy is selfishly spent on preserving myself, licking my wounds, and seeking affirmation. The best solution is probably self-forgetfulness.

Litany of Humility

O Jesus! Meek and humble of heart, hear me
from the desire of being esteemed,
from the desire of being loved,
from the desire of being extolled,
from the desire of being honored,
from the desire of being praised,
from the desire of being preferred,
from the desire of being consulted,
from the desire of being approved,
Deliver me, Jesus.
from the fear of being humiliated,
from the fears of being despised,
from the fear of suffering rebukes,
from the fear of being calumniated,
from the fear of being forgotten,
from the fear of being ridiculed,
from the fear of being wronged,
from the fear of being suspected,
Deliver me, Jesus.
That others may be loved more than I,
that others may be esteemed more than I,
that in the opinion of the world others may increase, and I may decrease,
that others may be chosen and I set aside,
that others may be praised and I go unnoticed,
that others may be preferred to me in everything,
that others become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should,
Jesus grant me the grace to desire it.

Say this every day, and look at the advice on that site for conquering pride. I just said a prayer for you, too!

Thank you! Never read this. It is beautiful, poignant, and convicting.

Another good prayer might be the prayer of St Francis…
*
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
Where there is sadness, joy.
Code:
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

Amen. *
Peace
James
