Having been to Europe I have noticed Mormon missionaries proslytizing people outside our churches and cathedrals. A little research uncovered the fact that they are often told to go there and try to convert members of the “great whore”. They even go inside the churches to witness to people. Now in Salt Lake City they are complaining about evangelicals who pass out tracts and do exactly the same things on Temple Square. Sound like a double standard? As a Church we should make a fuss about this when they claim they just want good relations with us.

I’ve never heard of this before. Most Mormons I speak to (and most to the people I speak to in a given day are Mormons) do not think the Catholic church is the Whore of Babylon. That was the case 50 years ago but it simply isn’t true anymore. I don’t think we should complain. I think we should teach our people about their faith! I simply can’t imagine a person that really knows their Catholic faith converting to Mormonism, or any other faith for that matter. The Catholic church has all the sacraments, all the truth, all of the history. What’s missing is a commitment on the local level to teach the truth of the faith and expect people to live it.

On the sites I have seen they still claim we are the “whore” and the Protestants are “daughers of the whore”. I have personally seen them around our cathedrals although they didn’t approach me. One from Italy said they even hung around St. Peter’s even though it is illegal to tract on the square. This is recent times not 50 years ago. Don’t you think they may just be telling you they don’t believe that or do that anymore…but in fact they really do?

Anything’s possible although I doubt my family, friends and co-workers are lying to me. I would be curious to see what website you’re refering to. As far as them proselytizing near our churches, it doesn’t bother me a bit. We have the truth and if we teach our members their faith we have nothing to fear.

Well they were here in Ireland many times trying to convert me, but they didn’t.
Infact they left with a very unconvincing look on their face and I felt sorry for them.
Makes me wonder though about the hidden adjenda, when they could go to places where they haven’t heard about God, instead of preaching to people that have.

Catholics with a poor grounding in their faith can become easy prey for these people.

I have heard rumors before (and I am not espousing the truth of these) that the LDS especially target Catholics because we tend to be very weak in our faith. If this is true, then it would be no stretch believing they hang around Catholic churches and stuff like that with the specific intent of converting us.

When I converted to the Catholic Church from my protestant church, a Mormon friend of mine was horrified and genuinely concerned for my soul. He said “Anything but Catholic! Please, please not Catholic!” I do not claim to know official Mormon teaching, but this particular friend definitely believed that the Catholic Church was evil. This, of course, is not limited to the Mormon church. So many people are taught over and over again that the Catholic Church is evil, that really they are doing the only logical thing to do-- try to save people from the percieved evil. I admire their courage and sincerity, but I pray for thier convesions and try to share the Truth with them in a respectful way.

Yours,
Jessica

Gosh that sounds like something I would say. I can’t tell you how awed I am that the majority of LDS I know are so involved in their church, and so passionate about it. I wish more Catholics were that way.
