Mormons don't believe in polygamy you say?

I was told by mormons that if you die single, “through no fault of your own,” you will be sealed to some random person so that you can go to the celestial kingdom. Then they said that there are more faithful women than men, so there will be polygamy so that everyone can be sealed.

I have heard that they at least used to believe that Jesus had 3 wives.

Also, if the mormon president tells peoplea to restart polygamy, the majority will listen, no matter what their personal opinions are. They are completely devoted to following him. A mormon once told me that if the president told him to shoot me, he would.

The OP posited two scenarios: a temple-married man who divorces his wife civilly to marry a trophy wife in the temple; and a temple-married man whose wife dies and marries another woman in the temple. I agree with the LDS posters here that the former situation is rare and repugnant. But the latter situation is not so rare. In that scenario, it is permissible for a righteous man married in the temple to marry another woman in the temple after his first wife dies. After death, he will be sealed to both women; they will both be his wives in the Celestial Kingdom. As the OP stated, the same is not true for righteous, temple-married women whose husbands die. They may not be sealed to another man in the temple, unless her first temple marriage is voided by Church HQ.

For righteous LDS men, it is possible to be sealed eternally to more than one woman in the Celestial Kingdom and reside in that kingdom with them. LDS theology and policy permit this and indicate that polygamy will therefore exist in that kingdom.

I’ll throw you another curve. In Mormonism, a woman can also be sealed to two men, but only after all of them are dead.

I was told this by a person I once knew who worked in the temple and had experience with questions about Temple sealings. Because my own mother was divorced and remarried, I posed the hypothetical situation to my Mormon friend of what would be done with her ~ would she be sealed to her first husband or her second husband? The answer I received was that she would be sealed to both of them, after all of them were deceased, and the Lord would work it out in eternity.

Bottom line ~ sealing to multiple spouses isn’t just for men, it is possible for women too.

AClaire,
I hope you have read what Finrock had to say here on this thread. You will believe what you want to believe, but Mormons who are listening to the teachings of the LDS church and who understand them, understand that any teaching will be totally consistent with the scriptures and with personal revelation by the Holy Ghost to confirm that a teaching is true. Inactive mormons or ex-mormons may say things that are not only not true, but are deliberate falsifications.

Men in the LDS church are encouraged to marry, and are expected to seek a natural, loving relationship through dating and social interaction. If they have had those opportunities and shirked the responsibility, then they made a choice in this life that won’t be rectified in the spirit world or in the Millenium. Their choice was theirs to make, in mortality.

Women in the LDS church are also encouraged to have social interaction and be reasonably involved in seeking to be married by how they live their life. They may not have the opportunity in this life, but there will be no “random” relationships created in the spirit world or during the Millenium.

The spirits in Paradise have sociality, and can “meet” new people in their interactions if they choose that for themselves. Would it be hard to comprehend that among those new relationships in Paradise, an unmarried woman may find a mutually fulfilling relationship with someone such as the spirit of a boy who died before they were age eight but who being a wonderful person (and an adult spirit in Paradise) wants to enjoy the relationship of marriage in the eternities? Such a marriage would be worked out during the Millenium, between people with mutual affection and compatibility for each other.

Hello AClaire11! Welcome to the discussion.

I’ve heard some of the things you mention in your post. I don’t believe that there is any official position on this, but, it being in line with a just God, I agree that if someone didn’t have an opportunity to be sealed to another in this life, through no fault of their own, and they desire to be sealed in the afterlife, they will be given that opportunity. I don’t know about the whole random part. I doubt it will just be a random thing. Also, I don’t know how anyone will know that there will be more women in the afterlife than men. Maybe that will be true, but I think anyone who claims this is merely giving their opinion on the matter.

The Church has never taught, as a matter of doctrine, that Jesus was married, whether to one person or to multiple wives. I think many Mormons, as myself, believe that Jesus was probably married. As we view marriage and familial ties to be after the pattern of heavenly life, in my experience, atleast, Mormons don’t generally see it as a problem.

The OP postulates the position that Mormons don’t believe in polygamy in an apparent attempt to show how Mormons are being deceptive about their claim. Actually, Mormons don’t practice plural marriage and believe practicing plural marriage to be a sin, unless it is approved by God and practiced under strict guidelines. Mormons understand that plural marriage has not been approved by God for over a hundred years. There is an apparent confusion here between the terms sealed and marriage.

Mormons believe that when God sanctions and/or commands the practice of plural marriage, as he has done in the past, then the practice is justified in God’s eyes insofar as it is done under approved priesthood authority and within the guidelines that God has approved. On a more personal note, if plural marriage were to be reinstituted by a prophet of God, I do not know how all members of the Church would react, but I would definately find it a bitter pill to swallow. I would seek to receive my own, personal witness from the Holy Ghost that it is true. Most Mormons I know would probably feel the same way.

As far as your friend shooting you if the prophet commanded it, I think your friend is a bit of a zealot. This isn’t normal Mormon thinking.

Thanks for your comments. I hope my post has been helpful.

Kind Regards,
Finrock

Hi Finrock,

I have to disagree with you about Jesus being married. This isn’t a theological objection but a practical one. Consider the obligation of a man to his wife and any children they have together, especially in the ancient world. Had Jesus been married, knowing that He would be leaving this earth at a relatively young age, would have been very irresponsible of Him, not the sort of thing a God, or even a member of a Godhead, would do.

Also, God has never commanded polygamy. Further, Jesus made it quite clear that marriage is between one man and one woman.

MelanieAnne,
Thanks for this very insightful observation. I had always felt I was hearing the wrong thing (it didn’t feel right) when I have heard speculation about Jesus being married, but I hadn’t really thought about the point you have made here. Thanks! It makes sense to me.

Hi MelanieAnne!

I’m not married to the idea of Jesus being wed (get it…married…heh…). I’ve always speculated that he was, but I don’t have any burning testimony of the fact. My point, really, is that I personally, don’t have a problem if Jesus was married. In other words, if it were ever shown to be true that Jesus had a wife or wives, it wouldn’t phase my testimony of him being the Savior of mankind.

I’ve never considered the point you make here, but it seems rational to me. Thanks for sharing it.

Kind Regards,
Finrock
