Mormons: How do you read "The Book of Mormon"

I will! I will!

It’s mostly chronological as has been mentioned here.

Despite what others say, the BoM is one of our main sources for teachings and doctrine. While it certainly does not contain everything we believe, it is a fantastic guide to daily Christian living.

Having read it many many times, let me know if there are questions.

I recommend everyone read it if you want to know what Mormons believe.
The Book of Mormon contains none of the uniquely LDS doctrines. It is, however, the gateway that the LDS use to dupe people into thinking they are Christian.

Paul (formerly LDS, now happily Catholic)

The real source of mormon faith and practice can be found much more in Doctrine and Covenants. The BOM not so much.

Hooray we have a volunteer. 🙂

I see that it is a main source. And I’m thankful to know that it is in chronological order.

While I’m not an LDS, I hope I get something out of reading it. It’s always nice to learn something from our neighborly religions.

Read the Pearl of Great Price and the Doctrines and Covenants first. The Book of Mormon is a bait-and switch tactic- they changed their doctrines after the BoM was paublished.

If you are still interested, you can then read the Book of Mormon, which presents a basically Baptist perspective of Christianity. My recommendation is that you read Ether, then Enos, and through until you get back to Ether. The first three books are rubbish, except what was copied from the Bible.

The problem is that the BoM is not the only thing Mormons believe. One would have to read your other “scriptures” as well and then keep up with the various “revelations” and interpretations of those “revelations” as they come along in order to know what Mormons believe.

That being said, welcome to CAF. 🙂

I tried to read it a couple of times because I wanted to know what my best friend found in it. Just way tooooooooo boring, and that came to pass was just too much.
Rather read my dictionary.

Your statement is fair. I would respond that the BoM is the foundation of the doctrine we believe concerning Jesus Christ, and our personal relationship to Him. That is why LDS personal and religious learning centers around this book.

At the college I go to, there were some Mormon missionaries and I had a good chat with them. They invited me to their somewhat like youth group and gave me a copy of The Book of Mormon.

While I’m very convicted in my Catholic faith, I do have an interest of other religions. Mostly because I hate being ignorant of other peoples beliefs. So I’ve decided to read The Book of Mormon. However I don’t seem to understand how to read it. Is it like the Bible where it’s not in a chronological or story like order? How do you read it?
The b o m will tell you nothing about Mormonism because beliefs peculiar to that faith are not found in it. For Mormon belief you have to go to the Doctrine and Covenants. The b o m is a very boring story probably taken from other works that were around at the time, and large parts copied from the 1700s KJV, complete with errors. If you search this site you will find lots of information about the b o m, but contrary to what the missionaries will tell you, there is no truth in it. Check it out on Mormonthink.

Please don’t read the BOM just because you hate being ignorant of other’s beliefs. It will not tell you much about the LDS faith. History of the church is probably your best bet. Try all sources. It is a changing religion with changing revelations. Look at the early church and how it has evolved. Look at the offshoots and their history. Look at what the early LDS prophets taught and what they teach now. “By their fruits ye shall know them”

If you do choose to read the BOM, keep in mind that it is not the whole story. It has also changed, as well as the Doctrine & Covenants (section 132 is particularly interesting).

You can know a lot from those who have lived it. Look at some old posts on the LDS church.

I kind of like reading the dictionary, not to read through like a novel but like a book of trivia, it passes the time during commercials or on hold:)

I have read it several times. It never gets easier. It is exactly what it sounds like when you read it. It is fiction written by a man trying very hard to sound what he considered Biblical.

Sorry, but as an avid reader and book collector. I can never throw a book away.

While I too think the BOM has major historical and theological flaws it still is a book.

I’m very thankful that the gentlemen missionaries gave it to me for free, because on amazon it goes for $2.00.
Do you honestly think it’s worth $2?

  1. It is not worth $2.
  2. If you ask the missionaries for one, you will have to earn it by listening to them. Not fun, especially if they then start pestering you.
  3. It is free at Amazon amazon.com/Mormon-Church-Christ-Latter-day-Saints-ebook/dp/B00BNGXNW2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414517873&sr=8-1&keywords=kindle+book+of+mormon
  4. If you really want to read it and #3 fails for you, you can check it out from the nearest public library.
The first time I read it, I was so angry at the drivel and blasphemy I nearly threw it away.

Hello Adwagi,
Code:
I'm no longer LDS but I see the book as a guide to the world of religion. In that sense it is true. It gives warnings with regard to priest craft, It provides a definition of the gospel, and it warns about a mist that prevents people from seeing the truth.
“Priestcraft”. But you said you’re no longer Mormon
