Yes, it’s true.

And why should the Pope issue a statement about it? I’m sure there are plenty of Protestant, Muslim, Jewish, Jehovah’s Witnesses, etc. buildings in Rome.

Yup it’s true. Issuing a statement would probably be counterproductive, best not to give it press as much as possible- negative attention is still attention.
