U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ “Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services,” fourth edition, directive No. 36

“Compassionate and understanding care should be given to a person who is the victim of sexual assault. Health care providers should cooperate with law enforcement officials and offer the person psychological and spiritual support as well as accurate medical information. A female who has been raped should be able to defend herself against a potential conception from the sexual assault. If, after appropriate testing, there is no evidence that conception has occurred already, she may be treated with medications that would prevent ovulation, sperm capacitation, or fertilization. It is not permissible, however, to initiate or to recommend treatments that have as their purpose or direct effect the removal, destruction, or interference with the implantation of a fertilized ovum” (No. 36). www.usccb.org/bishops/directives.shtml What else do you need to read? Duh!

The Church is against ABC in the case of INTERcourse which of course rape is not.

A great deal of suffering in this world is because we suffer the consequences of each others’ sins. Think of all the poor who are poor because systems and people are greedy. The poor don’t get a choice of whether they want to carry this cross.

It is the same with conception due to rape. It feels much more horrible because it is up close and personal, but still there is not really a “choice,” because it would be murder. The rapist has no right to make an innocent suffer, but his sin doesn’t make it right for the mother to in turn make another innocent suffer by killing the baby.

The whole contraception issue is muddied because most women have no clue where they are in their cycle at any given time, so we don’t really know how many times it “fails” and all that.

I do believe that if we are going to hold the mother to the prolife standards of the Church, we have to uphold them, too. I think any mom brave enough to carry a child conceived by rape should be completely supported by her parish. All medical costs beyond what her insurance covers, baby supplies, breastfeeding help. adoption paid for, household help, medical leave, everything
