Why is Teresa Tomeo no longer the host of Morning Air??

There must be something wrong with the people who run Relevant Radio. Jeff Cavins quits and now Teresa is no longer part of the program. She didn’t even return to her former job as new director. Teresa did a great job on an interim basis and I was hoping that they would give her the job permanent basis. Now we are stuck listening to reruns of Teresa’s old shows for the next couple of weeks. It’s interesting that they are not replaying the best of Jeff’s old shows. This all smells of corporate politics (and in-fighting) and Morning Air is supposed to be a Christian radio show!

I am debating whether to stop listening to the show all together. Anyone have any information?

Don’t jump to conclusions yet. Didn’t she say something about going to Rome?

Anyways, have you checked their website yet?

I think that it’s www.relevantradio.com.

(Not sure of the web address but I think it’s right). They might have the answers there or an e-mail address you could write to.

Could this be a summer thing? Just a thought.
Don’t be too quick to think the worst.

I agree with the first respondent…don’t jump too quick! I believe that Teresa Tomeo is off to Rome for a couple of weeks. I heard her mention on the radio that she would be meeting up with Chjristine Mugridge while there so perhaps we will get some live updates sometime before she returns. I will bet that she will be back on the air after Labor Day.

The saga with Morning Air continues in Detroit which has a large Catholic radio audience. WDEO has announced that it will no longer carry Morning Air. Teresa Tomeo’s local show, Catholic Connection will fill the 8-10 AM time slot. Coincidence? I don’t think so. Something happened behind the scenes here to cause a rift.

Personally, I’m glad with the change at WDEO. Teresa is a fantastic host. Our gain is Relevant Radio’s loss.

*“it has become clear to me that there are philosophical differences that would prevent me from continuing my on-air work”

*:hmmm: Wonder what those could be. I never picked up on anything philosophically different from her approach to issues. I can’t imagine her approach would have been at odds with Relevant Radio’s philosophy. This is really quite interesting.

This is getting curiouser and curiouser!!!

I live in Minneapolis and was thrilled when “Relevant Radio” came to town (even though I thought and think that that is a dumb name).

But there’s been a lot of changes and they probably have to do with money and control.

The station was purchased by somebody from Green Bay, WI, who made a lot of money in some industry and wanted to share his faith. Jeff Cavins was hired and the “lead station” of the network was to be in Minneapolis (actually in a suburb called Golden Valley).

Then Jeff left after a year or so (most of the time on a very low power signal here) and Teresa Tomeo took over last Spring.

Now Teresa is gone.

The local headquarters is no longer in Golden Valley, MN, but in Chaska, MN.

The web page makes reference to two Masses a week being broadcast from the “Relevant Radio National Headquarters” from the “Chapel of the Most Holy and Living Sacrifice.” It does not say where that Chapel is, but, as it was consecrated by Bishop Zubik of Green Bay, it appears that the Green Bay folks want their network back.

A photograph of the Chapel appears to show that it has a seating capacity of about 20, as if it is in somebody’s home.

Three days a week, Mass will continue to be broadcast from St. Olaf Church in Minneapolis.

They used to have Al Kresta from Detroit live in the afternoons, but have booted him to a replay in the late evening and replaced him with Drew Mariani live in the afternoon. Drew has been talking a lot about his recent move to Green Bay.

Today there is no mention of Teresa on the Web Site and the page has not been updated since the “two week summer break” was announced.

As I say, Curiouser and Curiouser.

I think the same “Money and Control” issues are being played out at Ave Maria University after their move to Florida. There are some mighty upset folks upset in the Detroit area, I understand.

This is what I heard:
  1. Jeff Cavins had “philosophical disagreements” with the management of Relevant Radio. They invited him to leave. They told the listeners that he would be coming back in the fall with a new program, but what they really had in mind is playing some tapes of his talks. In reality, he is gone for good.
  2. Teresa Tomeo was Jeff’s interim replacement. Eventually she was asked to be the host of “Morning Air,” but, after consulting with others in the radio business, she turned down the offer because of management problems at Relevant Radio. Like Jeff, she is not coming back.
  3. “Morning Air” never caught on when Jeff was the host. Perhaps the show would have done better with Teresa since she is a radio pro. However that may be, Relevant Radio is scrambling to find a new host.
  4. Relevant Radio has been making strange changes in its lineup. Drew Mariani is a good guy, but many people think it’s odd to put him on in the afternoon in place of “Catholic Answers Live,” which was moved to a morning slot and is now aired taped, not live. It’s not likely that Drew will draw as large an audience as “Catholic Answers Live.”
  5. A main problem seems to be that Relevant Radio wants to own the programs it airs, which means it has to produce them, but it doesn’t seem to be very good at that yet.
  6. Some people think Relevant Radio, which has ticked off a lot of people in Catholic radio, will go the way of Catholic Family Radio, which never got its programming organized and so went bankrupt.
