I knew that Morrissey never really talked about his sexual orientation, but I was not aware of everything I have bolded below.

My sister-in-law introduced me to The Smiths a few years ago shortly after I got married. I was way too young to even know who they were back in the 80s, but she was in her pre-teens/teens then and into that kind of music so my husband actually grew up hearing their music as well and liked them too. I absolutely loved their albums and lyrics and bought a cd after my SIL leant me her DVD with their videos. Morrissey’s voice worked so well with the songs.

I’m a big U2 fan as well. 😃 I think we own almost all of their albums when we married and combined our cds.

And this is coming from someone whose main love is classical music, opera, along with chant and other sacred music.
I’ve seen Morrissey live four times, have all his albums, I love his lyrics and his wit. His humour is great, and his songs convey lots of human emotions. Though I may be biased since I’m originally from the North of England, too.

He’s my favourite artist and I love the Smiths, too. I also happen to like to listen to Gregorian Chant, Plainsong, etc.

Oh, and I’m a Catholic Seminarian. 😉

Of course there’s nothing wrong with his music!

Oh, and for the record, he’s never actually said that he is gay, straight or for that matter, anything!

**Plus, we’re talking about a guy who sold Rosaries as part of his 2004 tour merch, appeared in clericals in a 2004 video, wears aftershave which has been described as smelling very much like Incense, has written about a beautiful church in his hometown in one song, has a large latino fanbase, openly practised celibacy for a number of years and can frequently be seen making the sign of the cross during performances. **

Like it or not, he’s steeped in the Faith he was raised in! 🙂 One fan forum was debating a while back whether or not they thought he was practicing his Faith because he seemed so keen to reference it. Perhaps his time in Rome revitalised him:D

So don’t worry, OP. You’re in good company as a Morrissey/Smiths fan! There’s far worse stuff you could listen to.

Morrissey is just too depressing. Whether it’s his newer stuff like “Something Is Squeezing My Skull” or his classics like “Every Day Is Like Sunday,” I don’t know ANYONE who would describe him as ‘feel-good music.’ He’s like the Grim Reaper compared to other UK exports like Kate Nash or Lily Allen (both of whom are always chipper and bubbly.)

The Smiths were never so one-note, despite the morose “Please Please Let Me Get What I want” being the most prominent song on the “(500) Days of Summer” soundtrack. (Please, please, please let “(500) Days of Summer,” due on DVD any day now, get one of the Best Picture Oscar nominee slots.)
