Mortal Sin and Communion

Can a person who has comitted a mortal sin, confessed, received absolution but is supposed to take certain steps to rectify the mortal sin take communion? Should not a person be able to walk out of confession ready to take communion? I was having this conversation with someone and they told me that some absolutions are “conditional”…I never heard of this!

As far as I know, if you get absolution, you may commune. If you failed to perform the pennance or made proper restitution, you would be guilty of a new sin, you would not void the absolution of the previous sin. That’s just my instinct, I’ll let someone with actual knowledge answer.

In the Middle Ages I believe there was a practice of making the sinner perform their penance before absolution was granted. However, once the words of Absolution are said, forgiveness is complete and the person may receive Communion, even if they have not completed their penance.
