If I lied to my parents really quickly without any major thought about one of my clothes I forgot to put inside my suitcase for travel, is that venial or mortal sin?

Venial.

Editing to add: There needs to be full knowledge and deliberate consent for a sin to be mortal. An impulsive white lie probably won’t fit the bill.

That said, you should probably tell your parents the truth. Lemme guess - Mom told you it would be cold and asked you to pack a sweater?

I’d confess it. There’s that honor-thy-mother part to consider.

You need to speak with a confessor. People here are not theologians equipped to answer.

True. I think confession can be beneficial not only for mortal or venial sins but also in reflection.

That said, just as there are priests who give better homilies, there are probably certain priests who give better confessions. In my opinion, a good confessor is someone who matches the need of spiritual guidance with the need for spiritual truth. Sometimes I feel some priests are one extreme or the other. Too much spiritual truth can scare away a novice while too much spiritual guidance can ensure that someone stays in a state of sin that is dangerous for their soul. Absolving someone of their sins is one part of confession; the other is spiritual direction where the individual seeks help from the Holy Spirit for true repentance is the other.

I think this is a venial sin, but as otjm said, go to your confessor for some spiritual guidance hopefully.
