Is eavesdroping a mortal sin?

My grandmothers in the hospital…in ICU. I listend to a whole phone conversation between my aunt and my dad because I was worried something was wrong with my grandmother. Well , there Is someting wrong. I just dident trust my parents to tell me the whole truth, I wanted to test them, and test my family because im sick of my parents tryingi to shelter us… im 20 years old i don tneed to be shelterd on the illness of a grandparent…they did that for years. I just dont trust people that well…anways…I walked up stares, asekd my dad a few qustions about why my aunt called…he dident really tell me. he kind of lied, sort of. he jus said " oh yea, grandmas fine, just not getting enough sleep and your uncle is there with her"…well he Neglected to tell me about the on how she was throwing a fit because she thought we all abandond her, neglected to tell me about the UTI, and neglected to tell me that they have the breathing mask back on her…sooooo I dont trust him obvoiusly now. so, am i in mortal sin???

Sounds like a venial sin to me, along the lines of being a gossip. Don’t take that to the bank, though.

I know, what i wrote sounds like im a gossip, but thats not what I try to be. its just…call me parinoid. I dont trust people anymore. People lie to me, Ive been hurt so much. My heart achs because i sometimes hurt people, and then the poeple i hurt dont tell me i hurt them, and then i feel bad because i dident know what i did untill its too late and such…i dont trust people to tell me the truth. I dont completly trust anyone. I have to get the same answer from dozzens of differnt sources before ill beleave something is true…its an ocd thing…

obviously 2 of the requirements for mortal sin have been commited…but…is it a GRAVE MATTER??? thtas what im wondering… my intent was not to hurt anyone…or use that information agaisnt something…it was just used to 1, for me to know the truth about whats going on…and 2…to test my parents to see if they can be completly trusted…and 3…im really worreid about my grandmouther, she could very well die in the next few days and im very concernd… i have no intent in harming anyone…the only one that got hurt by this (except god) was me, because i learnd my dad doesent tell me the whole truth and it hurts cause now i lost trust…

Sorry, I wasn’t calling you a gossip, just saying that this matter sounds to me like it’s roughly on the same level as being a gossip. 🙂

wait a miniute…isent it still dishonoring parents though??? i just realised that…

Calm down! It’s obvious that you can dishonor your parents in ways that are venial sins only, like rolling your eyes at something they say, or blowing off a chore like taking out the trash to play with your friends.

Anyway, no one on an internet board is really qualified to offer much more than idle speculation on your situation, sorry. Go to confession, you’ll feel better and maybe you can ask your priest for some guidance in identifying what kinds of sins are mortal and what kinds venial. All the best–

Mark.

Ahhhh White Dove…what a beautiful nick you’ve chosen…Mark is right, calm down. Its good to be introspective…but it sure can’t seem to us like mortal sin, anymore than the well intentioned deceptions to which you have been subject are. We’re all made of such frail stuff and err even when our intentions are good. Thank God for His mercy. Kyrie Eleison, Lord have mercy…Just ask a good confessor about it. And love Mom and Dad in their mistakes. You seem like a wonderful girl. I’ll remember your Grandma at the offertory tomorrow.

If I am not mistaken, you also have to know that the sin you committed was grave matter in order for it to be “grave matter”. So then that would imply that the situation you are referring to was not a mortal sin.

im not a girl lol

so this isent grave matter?

I thought braking ANY comandment on the 10 was a mortal sin…because i thought ALL of them were grave matter…and then if you did them with the other two qualifications of a mortal sin, then the sin is mortal, but if it lacked the other two…then its venial…

in my opinion, in general, detailed sin questions like this should be referred to one’s confessor. otherwise you put yourself in danger of scrupulosity.

There’s such thing as a deliberate venial sin. But I second the advice of telling it to your confessor.

HOWEVER, you’re eavesdropping on a conversation which was none of your concern and no one in your family was under any obligation to let you in on any information whatsoever that does not concern you. Your dad’s reply was a nice way of saying this. If he felt it urgent enough to let you know he would have. The phone call was to him and not you.

God Bless,
