it’s Long, but PLEASE read:

I’ve been masturbating for a few years now…I didn’t even realize it was a sin…or what it was for that matter (i’m only 16), until I read that it was mortal sin. I tend to over analyze things…and have been debating wether it was a mortal sin or not…being that I didn’t really know that it was a sin…or what it really was (I knew whatever it was…it couldn’t be good for my body…but didn’t really think about committing a grave sin. I’ve been so stressed and asked God for a sign two days ago (was hoping to be 100% sure that it wasnot a mortal sin…can’t really risk your eternal future…)…and yesterday I was watching Mother Angelica and she started talking about how we need to go to confession and confess our sins, especially mortal sin, because we never know when the world will end or when we could suddenly die…I really don’t think I commited a mortal sin, because I didn’t really think about the sin and deliberately do it…But I’m not sure if Mother Angelica’s talk was the sign I prayed for. Honestly, I’m scared that I’ll just drop dead any second and be punished for my “mortal sin”. Considering the requirements, I’m not really even sure if I committed a mortal sin, but then I asked got for a sign (for guidance), and Mother Angelica was talking about mortal sin AND how we need to go to confession…Coincidence? I don’t think my sin even fit the requirments, but now I’m scared…Was this a sign? Will I drop dead at any second without confession? Or was this simply a coincidence since I don’t really even think about this as a sin (i don’t think I really contemplated it as a major sin and deliberately offended God)?

Sorry for my the rambling on, I’m just in MAJOR need of guidance.

Thanks! God Bless.

1: Mortal sins are sins which the offender in question KNOWS it’s a grave sin.
2: It has to be of a grave nature.

The fact that you aren’t sure and looking for “signs” automatically shows it’s not mortal, however it may still require confession, not because your soul is facing death though. Do not stress that you are going to drop dead and go to hell, masturbation is something many, many people struggle with. I too struggled with it for a while, and hopefully it has gone away, but not without much gnashing of teeth. I still have to be careful and pray regularly concerning this so I don’t fall again.

Go to confession and mention that you’ve been doing without the full knowledge that it was wrong. Now that you know that such act is a mortal sin and this offends our Lord, wouldn’t you want to reconcile with Him?

Also, remember that the devil will not want you to do this. So, pray for the strength to overcome the reluctance to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Do yourself a favor, and receive the spiritual freedom that this sacrament gives. Trust me, I had the same situation with you. I confessed and felt better.

If I were you I’d find a priest you trust, a priest who you know if both holy and orthodox, and talk to him about it. None of us are priests, as far as I know, and they are entrusted with the care of your soul.

Pax Christi tecum.

Dude, trust me… that is NOT a long post. 😃
I tend to over analyze things…and have been debating wether it was a mortal sin or not…being that I didn’t really know that it was a sin…
It probably wasn’t… but even best case scenario, it’s still going to have been a venial sin, and you’ll be much better off going to confession anyway, and explaining the situation to the priest.
But I’m not sure if Mother Angelica’s talk was the sign I prayed for.

I asked got for a sign (for guidance), and Mother Angelica was talking about mortal sin AND how we need to go to confession… or was this simply a coincidence?
There’s really no such thing as “pure” coincidence when Divine Providence is in control. So even if it’s not the sort of crystal-clear sign you were hoping for, it’s still true that God placed Mother Angelica in your path like that in order to deliver that message. And obviously, it’s doing what it was supposed to do. 🙂

You don’t need the miraculous sign – and in fact probably shouldn’t have received it, if you were going to understand it as confirmation that you were in a state of mortal sin. Instead, Mother Angelica’s message brought you here, where we could help explain the slightly-more-complicated truth: even if you’re not in a state of mortal sin, strictly speaking, you have nevertheless been (unintentionally) riding a dangerous line, and God is calling you to the sacrament of confession.

He’s shown you the truth about your actions, and is now forcing you to make a choice: either grow in holiness, or begin to take full responsibility for actually committing mortal sins. And is, at the same time, trying to provide you with a way to gain the graces that He knows you will need to stay away from this sin in the future. Go to confession, strive to avoid this sin (and all other sins) in the future, and go back to confession as often as you need in order to restore and maintain your friendship with the Lord.
Honestly, I’m scared that I’ll just drop dead any second and be punished for my “mortal sin”. I don’t think my sin even fit the requirements, but now I’m scared…Was this a sign? Will I drop dead at any second without confession?
I think you’re definitely getting a little too worked up here… 🙂
But in answer to your question: probably not, no. The odds against Him deciding to just smite you at random are very low, to say the least. 😛 …but seriously, God doesn’t want you to go to Hell. He wants you to repent and grow in holiness. I’m sure He has a plan for your life, and this is simply the time that He’s asking you to make the first few steps in the right direction. Go with it, trust Him, and just be willing to accept whatever He has in store for you in this world. And whatever you do, don’t get too worked up about it. Just do your best. 🙂

the three requirements of committing a mortal sin are:
  1. the matter in question must be grave
  2. you knave to know its a mortal sin
  3. you need to have committed it out of full free-will (that means that if you were pressured into something or give your full consent to a particular circumstance/action then it might be not as severe as mortal sin, but perhaps a grave venial sin, or if you just didnt know then i would think it would just be a venial sin. as far as i understand that you need those three requirements together to have something considered a mortal sin otherwise its not (and please correct me if im wrong here! i wouldnt want to give anyone bad advice or teaching!)
either way, be happy for the grace to know youve done something wrong and that you accept it as wrong, confess your sins and be absolved and do your best to overcome your temptations! i will be praying for you!🙂

God Bless!
becks:)

p/s: there are some other good threads in regards to mortal sin (try checking out the ones about masterbation, mortal sin, and scrupulous anonymous (i deal with scrupulosity all the time and the 10 commandments for the scrupulous are a great help!))
