Why is pornography and masturbation a mortal sin?

It objectifies human beings. Or makes human beings objects of use for one’s own sexual pleasure.
It disorders human sexuality which is designed (obviously) for conjugal love.
For example:
A hammer is purposed for the good end of driving nails. I might also want to use it for bashing my neighbor in the head. If I do that, I use the hammer for my own selfish purposes, instead of that purpose it is designed for. That is disordered employment of the hammer.

Yes, though some people may find the hammer analogy misleading. To clarify, we commit immoral acts when we pervert the ends of our own faculties and persons. So, if I use a hammer to bash someone’s head in, the immoral component of that isn’t the misuse of the hammer, but the misuse of my own faculties and person towards ends contrary to my own nature. So if I use a bike for something other than locomotion, I might be using a bike for a purpose other than it is designed for, but I’m not necessarily doing anything contrary to my own ends and purpose, so I have done nothing immoral.

It is offensive to God;

6 Judah took a wife for his first-born Er, and her name was Tamar.

7 But Er, Judah’s first-born, offended Yahweh, and Yahweh killed him.

8 Then Judah said to Onan, ‘Take your brother’s wife, and do your duty as her brother-in-law, to maintain your brother’s line.’

9 But Onan, knowing that the line would not count as his, spilt his seed on the ground every time he slept with his brother’s wife, to avoid providing offspring for his brother.

10 What he did was offensive to Yahweh, who killed him too.

Genesis 38: 6-10

If you’re asking the question, you either don’t have a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, or, you’re not using it, or you’re not looking it up online.

The more general answer to your question is to read the whole Catechism. It will answer why you shouldn’t do a whole lot of things, including pornography and masturbation.

Your question can’t be satisfactorily addressed just in itself, by quoting a verse here or there in the Bible that specifically addresses those subjects. The overall context of avoiding sin is to be holy as God is holy.

Every person is made in the image and likeness of God, and sins “against the flesh” are denials of that dignity.

Or, looking for some information that might mitigate perceived culpability and thereby mitigate the call to go to confession.
Been there done that.
